Outlook fails to send mail and it is left in Outbox

I recently upgraded from Outlook 2000 to 2003. I work off-line and sync
with a remote Exchange server. Working on-line is not an option. Since
moving to 2003 I find mail is intermitently not being sent when I sync
(send/receive). The only fix I have found is to enter the Outbox and forward
each unsent mail to the intended recipients and send again then sync
(send/recieve) again. This is painful.

I have found no correlation to pin point the problem. It has occured for
new mail, reply mail and forwarded mail.

The most common occurance is for mail that I taken several minutes to
compose. The same problem existed with Outlook 2000 for emails that took
several minutes to compose, however 2000 would provide and immediate error
and not even put in in the Outbox. However, 2000 never failed to send new,
forwarded or replied email like 2003.

In Outlook 2003 when viewing the Outbox grouped by date the unsent email has
a date of "None".

This having to manually check mail is sent is starting to really annoy me.

I have installed every available patch/update to Windows 2000, Office and
Outlook.

Any help greatrly appreciated.

Did you do an upgrade on your system or a clean install? Tried it with a new
e-mail profile already? I recommend you do that at the location of the
Exchange server because up on first use it will recreate the cache of your
mailbox.

Thx. I created new profile. This certainly helped with performance. So
much so that I am now able to connect on-line from my remote office. But it
did not fix the intermittent issue of mail not being sent when working
off-line.

When working off-line I have Outlook setup to sync in the background every
30 mins. I am now wondering if there is any timing correlation with this and
mails that are not being sent (Date=None). For example, new mail composed
before or during background sync and complete during or after background
sync.

I am going to first turn off background email sync and manually sync. If
the problem goes away then I know it has something to do with background sync.

Hi Malcolm,
I too have been experiencing problems with some emails not sending from the
Outbox. I have discovered a kind of 'fix', but it's still not a satisfactory
solution for me. If you go to Tools/Options/Mail Setup tab and then check
the box for 'Send Immediately when Connected' ; this removes this time delay
factor you were commenting on and emails are sent immediately. But I prefer
to have more control over when I send my emails. If you have found a better
solution, please let me know. Good luck. Frankie
