Lisa

I just purchased a laptop with Vista. I need to setup Outlook Express to
interface with a software program I run at work. I do set up Outlook Express
on Vista?

So it's the same thing? I set it up the same? The software people told me I
had to use Outlook Express to interface??

Can I use a yahoo address or do I need to use a hotmail address? My software
support said I had to use Outlook Express instead of yahoo. If Outlook and
Windows Mail are the same, can I use any email address because I currently
use a roadrunner address w. Outlook.??? Also, they gave me specific ports. I
just went through a trial set up and I did not see a way to select a port.

You set up WM using the same info you used with OE.
I'm not sure what you mean by "interface with a software program".
Please explain.

It's not the same, but close enough that most Outlook Express instructions
are also usable in Windows Mail.

Connecting to Yahoo in the US requires an extra cost Yahoo account:

Windows Mail does not work with Hotmail. You may want to download
and install Windows Live Mail, which does:

For your Roadrunner address, see here:

For the port numbers, when you are setting up your email account, click on
Advanced while in the properties of your email account.

I have a program called ACT! 9.0 that interfaces with Outlook Express, Bob.
That is, messages from OE appear in that program and I can read and send
mail presumably without having to go outside the program. I called support
and asked if I could use my yahoo account and they said no, the interface
only worked with Outlook Express. I'm new to Vista and I posted on the OE
board and was told Vista did not have OE and gave me the link to post here.
Act! support told me I had to use ports 110 for smtp and 25 for pop3. I have
a hotmail account, a yahoo account and a roadrunner account in OE. I'm still
confused as to what I should use if hotmail won't work, yahoo has a charge
and Windows Mail is not the same as OE?????? HELP!

I also happened to think I cannot use my OE address. It needs to be my
boss's address and he does not have one in OE. I have an OE address on my
desktop using XP. He's using Vista and now I can't set up address for him
in OE. I get more confused by the minute. Or could I set up a Window's mail
address using the same info I used to set up OE????

Lisa,
If you haven't already it looks like you need to upgrade to ACT! 2008, ACT!
Premium 2008, or ACT! Premium for Web in order to use Windows Mail with the
program.

You'll find everything you need to know here:

I just got a new computer and I need to access OUtlook Express. I can not
find it anywhere... I have tons of saved messages I need that I do not have
in my Roadrunner account. How do I find Outlook Express. I have gone to
Internet Options and set Outlook Expess as my e-mail - but all I had to do on
my old computer was hit the Tools button and Read mail would be there and
ther was my Outlook express. Help....

Outlook Express can not be installed on Vista.

Windows Mail has replaced OE. There is a newer version, called Windows Live
Mail which is better.

You have to enter the same email account settings in WM or WLM that you did
in OE.
Keep in mind that WM cannot access Hotmail accounts, WLM can.

You can transfer your email contacts and messages from OE to WM/WLM.

Read the section on "Importing from Outlook Express"
http://www.oehelp.com/backup.aspx#oe2wm

Only Act! support can tell you if it is compatible with Vista.
We don't have any Act! experts here.

Generically, Windows Mail is pretty much equivalent to OE,
but if Act! depends upon some unique interfaces that exist only
in OE, then you could be out of luck. I find it hard to believe
that Act! hasn't already released a version that is compatible with Vista.

In general, email addresses are not limited to specific email programs.
Not all mail providers offer the same services, though. So, if your boss'
address is linked to a webmail-only service, you can't set up his account
in Windows Mail.
If you give us the specifics, we can give you some workarounds.
