You do not export Outlook Express to Windows Mail You do the following with the *.dbx files

From D Guess
<snip>

1) Create a folder in Explorer and name it C:\Old Mail

2) Copy ALL the dbx fles from OE6 to the C:\Old Mail folder on the Vista
machine. Be sure to include the Folders.dbx file, it is
required...................

3) File | Import | Messsages
4) Select MIcrosoft Outlook Express 6
5) Press NEXT
6) IMport mail from an OE6 store directory should be selected.
7) Press OK
8) Press BROWSE

Now, when you press the Browse button, Explorer will open.
There are three window panes. The two on the left are the ones we are
interested in and then only the one named FOLDERS is one we want to look
thrru, it's the one with the scrollbar.

At the top next to the forward and back buttons (two round buttons with
arrows) you should see an icon then your username and next to each of those
is a smal triangle.

On the triangle to the right of the icon, click on it and select Computer
Now, you should see the hard drive and the CD drives. double click on the C
drive icon. Probably named Local Disk (C:)

****
Now, in the right windows pane, you should see the Old Mail folder you
created and put the dbx files.
Double click on it to open it.

Ok, in the left windows pane, there should be some light highlighting for
the Old Mail folder to show it as selected.

At the bottom there is a line named Folder and probably shows Old Mail
listed there.

Delete the text Old Mail from the Folder line and then press the Select
Folder button on the botton right. Yes it should be empty.

When you select the Select Folder button, you are taken back to the browse
location and it should read C:\Old Mail

If it reads C:\Old Mail\Old Mail, go back and repeat the steps on the folder
select (just below the **** above.

If it does read C:\Old Mail then you are ready to finish the import.
Press NEXT and finish the import.

<end snip>

how do i export Outlook Express to vista mail?

You wish to transfer all your Outlook Express settings from a Windows XP
installation to Windows mail in Vista?

The best way is to use "Windows Easy Transfer," which is included in Vista.

Follow the instructions carefully and it will automagically transfer all of
your account settings and the contents of all folders (including usenet if
you use it).

The only things it will not transfer is your passwords for each account.

You can actually transfer a lot of other stuff too - but think twice,
transferring a load of mp3s etc will take a very long time.

Post back here if you are struggling.

Hi Bob. In the perfect world you would be right, but as Vista is far from
perfect, some of the functions are not working as they should. I have talked
with a Microsoft supporter about this problem, and he hope´s there will be a
solution with importing settings and email soon.

Hi Jim,

I don't know about a perfect world, but in my world Windows Easy Transfer
successfully migrated 3 email accounts and three usenet accounts and all my
stored messages and newsgroups absolutely perfectly. this was from a Windows
XP installation on one hard drive to a fresh Vista installation on another.

All I had to do was re-enter the passwords once.

So in fact there is a solution now.

I would think you, more than anyone, would recognize that its a question of
probabilities. <G>

BTW, who let you out of the box?

Hehe - Pandora...

No, not Pandora.

I was talking about you. You are supposed to be in a box and are only
theoretical.

Top marks Frank even though it's on Steve Cochran's web site.

Retrived all my e-mails from Outlook Express (Windows XP) without backing
them up before I installed "Vista".

I got a new HP with Windows mail and then i just installed office 2003 with
outlook and configured it, and on the tool bar it replaced the windows mail
link, so i configured the pop stuff on outlook, and some email downloaded to
the new computer, but i couldn't send.

now i know i really want to uninstall the outlook, and i can figure out how
to do that, but i also want all the emails that downloaded to be transferred
into windows mail. fortunately there aren't alot of them, and i could just
print the necessary ones out, but is there a relatively easy way to do this?

obviously i am not remotely a techie so please keep it simple

I searched and searched and experienced much frustration trying to import my
OE6 messages into Windows Mail. Peter's instructions are the ones that
FINALLY worked. Follow the steps carefully and IT WILL WORK!!! Thank you
Peter.

Thanks very much for this detailed explanation (and Frank's link) - I'm about
to attempt it! Before I do, can someone tell me whether it will successfully
achieve the transfer of all the dozens of Rules (directing messages by sender
to many different folders) that I have set up in OE?

I did a back up from Wndws ME/Outlook Express 5 to an external Hard Drive,
then recovered to Vista/Windows Mail using Storage Sync software. Everything
seemed to be working fine for about a month. I don't want to dump what I have
been building on in my inbox etc for the last month, so can I do a partial
transfer of just my "sent items"? After a month, the one thing I discovered
is that 2,900 of some important sent items didn't get saved from my Win
ME/Outlook Express 5 to my External Hard Drive. I would like to transfer my
full "sent items" folder to the Vista/
Windows Mail and still leave a full version on the old ME/Outlook Express 5
machine
so that I can access that folder on either computer. Thanks

I'm stuck with step 1) Create a folder in Explorer.

Do you mean in Internet Explorer(IE 7), or do you mean go to Computer/ C:
and create a new folder?
