My computer said I had an update to download so I pressed okay. Now my
Outlook Express has a Microsoft Outlook icon. How can I fix it?

Microsoft Outlook updates change the default mail handler to Microsoft
Outlook

1. http://www.oehelp.com/oedef.aspx; then...

2a. http://www.oehelp.com/oelnk.aspx

2b. (WinXP) [Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs >] Set Program Access and
Defaults > Email > ...

If still no joy, see:

When Microsoft takes IE 7 out of them, I will ever install another update.

That's a very foolish attitude. Instead of throwing all security
precautions to the wind, simply set your Windows Updates to "download
and inform me when updates are ready to install". Then when you get the
yellow shield telling you that updates are reading, click on the shield
to get the installation dialog box. Don't take "Express"; take
"Custom". That way you can see exactly what updates there are and if
you don't want IE7 uncheck the box next to it. You'll then get another
dialog box where you can check the box that says "don't remind me about
these updates again" and you won't get the IE7 update.

Not true. Done that. Checked off "don't remind me about
these updates again", but it did not stop IE7 from obtru-
ding with each subsequent update. There is an obvious
reason behind Microsoft's campaign to force this resource
hog down everybody's throat. Perhaps they plan to stop
supporting IE6 when Vista comes out.

Go manually to the Windows update site and do a custom scan. When the
updates are offered uncheck IE7 and set the flag to not display this update
again. If that still doesn't work turn off automatic updates and just go to
the WU site occasionally to do the custom scan to see what's offered.
Staying updated is important. Using Automatic Updates is not necessary to
stay updated.

I did, Oh Wise One.

Updaters stayed open by the droves on my task bar, and if I managed to close
them they would come right back.

I couldn't get the updaters to stay closed until I disabled updates.
