i've checked my view and its set to show contacts, but its telling me there arent any

i cant get it back how it was, i've run a system restore and nothing

just re-install your contacts from the backup copy you made of your
contacts...you did make (export) a copy of this contact file......

Don't know if this is your problem, but if your contact list reaches
somewhere between 100 - 150, it will become blank while your Address Book
will show all.

Hi Michelle, I have experienced the same problem. Bruce gave me the idea to try to delete some of the contacts exceeding a hypothetical maximum number and it worked. My contacts are back
Here is how I did it
In OE open your apparently (empty) address book
Press the button "Find People" which will open a search window
In the field "Name" type "a" and press "Find Now
At this point you'll have a list of all your contacts which you can skim trhough and edit. Try now to delete some which you don't need and the rest will all appear again as before the beginning of your nightmare
Hope this helps! But remember to take good backups as Marty says ;o
Take care
