Outlook Express problem

Every time I open O/E a box pops up stating " outlook
express has encountered a problem and needs to close".
There are two buttons I can press 'send error repot' or '
close'. If I send an error report it then closes O/E. If
I don't press any button I can still write out an e.mail
but will not let me send until I close O/E and open it up
again. It then sends the e.mail, but the same box pops up
again. Any ideas out there

When you get that error message, is there some place you
can click on to get details and it shows something like:

Error Signature -

AppName:
AppVer:
ModName:
ModVer:

If so, what is the information shown in those four fields?

I searched on http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;EN-US;KBHOWTO
and on http://www.google.com/
concerning the error message you are getting and could not find a definitive answer.

I suggest you try this:
START > RUN > sfc /scannow (Click OK or press Enter)
If prompted for your XP CD, hold down the left shift key on the keyboard while inserting
the XP CD and then when the CDROM drive lights go out, then let go of the shift key.
(The shift key thing is just so the CD does not autorun)
If needed, click on RETRY
Windows File Protection should come up and start scanning the system to make sure
that all XP system files are present.
Once that is complete, take out the XP CD (if you had to put it in)
Restart the computer
Go to Windows Update site and scan for updates and install any critical updates.
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp
Temporarily disable your Anti Virus program before installing any critical updates.
Restart computer after the critical updates have been installed.
Test Outlook Express
Post back with results - maybe someone else will have the answer if not resolved.

I sent this reply earlier, but it seems you did not see it.
I sent it in Rich Text previously.
I now try sending it in Plain Text
Plain Text always seems to chop these messages up -
especially annoying when it breaks up a hyper-text link url.

Hi XPuser
Have done what you suggested.
Windows file protection found everything ok there.
Then updates said there were no updates available.
O/E is still playing up.
One thing I did not mention was when I open O/E, after
about 30 secs, there is a strange noise from the hard
drive, like a train chugging up a hill, then the box pops
up. At first I thought it was my drive going but it only
happens with O/E.Could there be a disc fault do you think.
I had it checked out and was told if the disc was faulty it
would happen with other programs.
