I have a very strange problem that started about 5 days ago.

My Outlook Express has now started flagging all incoming mail as
having a file attached when most don't.

This is quite annoying as I have to open and check each mail to find
the ones that do have attached files.

I run XP SP2 with all updates, ZoneAlarm and AVG free anti-virus

How can I sort this?

Any help appreciated.

AVG does this to out going mail so may do it to incoming to. It's its message at the bottom. It is an attachment of sorts.

You can try shutting off AVG's certification of incoming and outgoing email.
However if the person who is emailing you has AVG and has certify outgoing
turned on, you will get this paperclip. From what I understand from a
previous search, it only occurs on XP SP2.

Tools>options>read

Find a checkbox called "Read all messages in plain text" and see if it is
checked.

If it is, then any email you get that was composed as "Rich text", in other
words HTML format will show as plain text when you view it but show a small
HTML attachment which you can also read.

This is because all HTML email has a plain version included in case it's
sent to a user who cannot do HTML email.

Plain text is the better option since it prevents spammers using web-bug to
track you etc, it would have been useful some years ago when viruses used
HTML to spread but that's not so relevant these days since other measures
have been taken against such viruses.

Highlight a message and go to the view options and you will see a view in
HTML option (Ctrl-Alt-h) there for this purpose

The later versions of ZA come with anti-virus. Perhaps, and this is just
a guess, that you have 2 anti-virus running 24/7 and your niggle is a
result of such. ie only run ONE anti-virus 24/7 if you are into that.
