my laptop recently died but the harddrive is still okay and i can view files
via USB. I cant find my emails where they are supposed to be. is there any
other way to get to them?

Hi Justin,

You might have to turn on the "Show Hidden Files" and "Show System Files" in
Windows Explorer to see these, but all O/E mailbox and newsgroup stores are
in a folder similar to the following:

"C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Local Settings\Application
Data\Identities\{DFF16927-88E6-4EAA-A097-
460B7E65289B}\Microsoft\Outlook Express\*.DBX.

I would save all these *.DBX files onto some sort of media just in case.
Then, once you have a computer available to you, it's quite easy to recover
all your mail by using File | Import | Messages in O/E.

You also probably should copy your address book. That is usually found at
"C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Application Data\Microsoft\Address
Book\UserName.wab".

Hi Justin,
You need to locate the *.pst* folders and copy them to the working computer
and from there you can import your e-mails to the working account on the
working machine.
Here are some links will explain in details:

Hi nass,

I just assumed that Justin was referring to Outlook Express, rather than
Outlook.

So now he knows what files -- either *.DBX or *.PST -- he needs to find on
his current hard drive....unless he's using some other E-mail client. :>

Alan

You are absolutely correct, as his Message header is about Outlook Express
not Outlook, but still *.pst* apply.
Thanks for pointing this out.

Hello Gordon,

Yes, I knew I had SOME reason for thinking he was using O/E, other than my
encroaching senility. :>

Hi nass,

I'm pretty certain that one cannot mix and match the mail stores between
Outlook and Outlook Express. And the file name extension for emails in O/E
is *.DBX. You're right about the extension of Outlook being *.PST.

Still, if one wants to use email stores in O/E that were created in Outlook,
or vice-versa, the user will have to export/import from one email client to
another.
