Outlook Express - can't export messages

Outlook Express 6 can't export messages on my computer. I get the following
message:

The export could not be performed.
An error occurred while initializing MAPI.

I've seen references to a technote about setting Outlook Express to non-
default and Outlook, but I've never used Outlook and switching Eudora to
default doesn't allow Outlook Express to export the messages.

Is there any workaround?

I need to backup my Outlook messages. Is there any way to do this with a
separate program?

OE will ONLY export to Outlook or Exchange Messaging.
