Did it ever work? See which solution fits you.

Spell Checking does not work in OE:

And:

An error occurred while the spelling was being checked or: Spell Check was
halted:

OE 6 does not come with it's own spell check. These are some free spell
check downloads.

Outllook Express does not include a spell or grammar checker, though Outlook
does.

I printed out Mcorsoft knowledge base article 224176 and
found that file CSAPIT3.DLL is missing The other files
Mssp232.dll and Mssp2_en.lex are present in the registry
and the backslash is present after "shared". My only
problem now is finding the CSAPIT3.DLL file on the Product
Recovery disc. Hope you have your problem solved by now.

Neither Windows XP, nor any other version of Windows, has ever
come with a Spell Checking facility. Outlook Express uses the
spell checker that comes with Microsoft Word, (or another
Microsoft Office program) if you have it installed.

If you don't have Word or Office installed, you probably don't
have a spell checker. However there are several downloadable
freeware/shareware alternative spell checkers that work with
Outlook Express and Outlook. Since I have no personal experience
with any of these, I'll let someone else recommend one.

On the other hand, if a Microsoft Office component *is*
installed, try the instructions at
http://michaelstevenstech.com/spellcheck.htm

No, that's not correct. They are identical in this respect.
Neither includes either a spelling or grammar checking.

The spell checker in OE6 will only work if you have MS Word installed. It uses the spell checking abilities of that software. No other word processors will work.

Or another component of Microsoft Office.

However note that although it's true that "no other word
processors will work," there are several third-party spelling
checkers that *will* work with Outlook Express.
