In Outlook Express place the cursor on Local Folders and select File,
Work Offline followed by File, Folder, Compact All. Do not attempt to
interupt or stop the process until it has completed. When it has
completed close and reopen Outlook Express and see if the offending
message will open. If not move on to the next stage, which is removal of
the message.
In Outlook Express create a a new folder by placing the cursor on Local
Folder and select File, Folder, New. Give the folder a name e.g.
AAInbox. Copy all messages except the offending message from the Inbox
to AAInbox. Next ascertain the file path to the Store Folder -Tools,
Options, Maintenance, Store Folder. Close Outlook Express.
Go to Start, Control Panel, Folder Options, View, Advanced Settings and
verify that the box before "Show hidden files and folders" is checked
and "Hide protected operating system files " is unchecked. You may need
to scroll down to see the second item. You should also make certain that
the box before "Hide extensions for known file types" is not checked.
Next in Windows Explorer make sure View, Details is selected and then
select View, Choose Details and check before Name, Type, Total Size, and
Free Space.
In Windows Explorer using the file path obtained earlier locate
Inbox.dbx and delete the file. Exit from Windows Explorer and reopen
Outlook Express. A new Inbox will have been automatically created by the
system without the offending message, Check that all is well and then
run Disk CleanUp to empty your Recycle Bin and run Disk Defragmenter.
