Outlook.exe stays in memory

I'm using Outlook 2003 but this also did it in outlook 2002. After closing Outlook I sometimes press Ctrl + alt + del and check the processes tab. I often find outlook.exe still here. When this happens my backup software won't back up my outlook.pst files. Why does this do it? and how can I stop it from doing it in the future.

You could see if it is an add-in to Outlook that hangs. Outlook loads
all add-ins when Outlook loads, and unloads all add-ins when Outlook
exits, so if an add-in hangs or crashes then it takes Outlook along with
it.

Tools -> Options -> Other -> Advanced

Otherwise, get used to it. Microsoft has yet to fix this problem.
Doesn't matter even if you have a pristine install of the OS and
Outlook. On exit, sometimes Outlook just goes brain dead trying to
cleanup and shutdown. Same thing can happen with Word (winword.exe),
especially if you use it as Outlook's editor. I don't think it really
is an OS fault since Outlook and Word are the only applications that I
have out of dozens occupying more than 20 gigs of disk space that
exhibit this defect. It would be nice if the bugs got fixed first and
then new features added but that's not what Marketing and Sales want.
They see non-critical bug fixes (and suprisingly they consider a hang in
Outlook and Word as non-critical although it can screw over subsequent
loads of the program and can even interfere with the OS) as
unprofitable. Some companies have a hard time realizing that customer
satisfaction means customer loyalty which equates to lower costs for
marketing their product and a stable base of revenue for solid upgrades
of the feature set. But then we're not talking about products that cost
$50K a pop.

Thanks

I have two add ins one for my palm and the other is for exchange

You said what I was thinking. These are Microsoft Office bugs that we have to learn to live with. I too have similar problems with winword.exe.

If you can stand to be without the palm plug-in for Outlook, try
disabling it for awhile to see if the number of outlook.exe hangs gets
reduced.
