hi everyone

i have a user that is using MS Outlook (XP). if someone sends them an
e-mail it doesn't show up until they go into their Outlook and click on to a
different folder. i've seen it before but don't remember how to fix it!
we're running Windows XP as well.

any help would be massively appreciated.

letmeoutofhere?? ;)
If I understand you right, you want a new mail alert on the desktop.
There are three ways, for the first two, Outlook has to be running:
1) Outlook> Tools> Options> E-mail Options> Advanced E-mail Options (for a
temporary alert on top of everything and an envelope in the Taskbar).
2) Outlook> Tools> Rules and Alerts> E-mail Rules> New Rule (for an alert
window that pops to the front and remains there, should you happen to be away
from the computer when it happens).
The third way is to associate that e-mail address with a .net passport. I
haven't done this except with Hotmail, but new mail alerts from that account
are sent to me through Windows Messenger, and appear temporarily on top of
everything. No e-mail client needs to be running (but Messenger does).

The problem you're having is that the information (called "UDP packets")
that Exchange is sending to notify Outlook of changes to your mailbox is
being blocked by something - probably the Windows Internet Connection
Firewall. You can set the registry values in
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q305572 (Outlook
2002) or http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q304849
(Outlook 2000) to cause Outlook to poll Exchange rather than waiting for
notifications.
