Outlook does not respond

Because my default PST file was getting too large with e-mails that I've been
saving and archiving, I decided to have several PSTs open instead and use the
Rule Wizard to move incoming messages to approriate folders. However, I
noticed that often Outlook ends up hanging and does not respond during the
normal Send/Receive request. What is peculiar is that it would work at some
times but not at other times. Some observations I made is that there is a
large number of messages that I am downloading (>4 messages) then there is a
higher likelihood of Outlook not responding. So what I end up doing is
force-quit Outlook using the Windows Task Manager and restart.

Has anyone experienced similar problems? Anyone know any remedy?

Thanks in advance!

Thanks Bill for your advice.

So I closed all the other PST files and kept only the default one open
(outlook.pst). And I also sent seven test e-mails to myself. So it turns
out that the Outlook does not hang anymore, and so it appears that my problem
was either having too many PST files open or having Rule Wizard moving
incoming messages to the other PST files.

So does this mean that I can only work with one PST file at a time? Or can
you think of any other remedy where I can still use several PST files?

Thanks again for your help.

It seems there is a performance hit there. It seems to be standard practise
not to use a lot of PST files and to archive regularly. You could use a few
but just keep their sizes down.

I just wanted to add that we are also experiencing the same problem and we
are only using 2 pst files; one is the main and the other is a new one with
only one folder and very few emails. I believe this is some kind of bug with
Outlook.
