Outlook distribution lists don't work

I recently moved my contacts to a new version of Outlook. Now my
distribution lists won't work. I thought it might be a quirk, so I created
new distribution lists from scratch, but they don't work either. Any
suggestions?

Version of Outlook? Don't work in what way? Error message?

Tips of the month:
-What do the Outlook Icons Mean?
-Create an Office 2003 CD slipstreamed with Service Pack 1

Outlook 2003
When trying to send to the distribution list I get the message "an
internal support function returned an
error" I tried setting up the lists again, but I get the same message.

How did you move your contacts to the new version?

I followed directions for copying the pst file and importing.
It worked on the same computer under the admin user name but not under my
regular user name

Importing definitely will ruin any distribution lists you have. Never
import a PST. Use File>Open>Outlook Data File to open a PST and then use
copy or move to put the items in your default PST. If you have the original
PST from which you imported, try opening it and looking in its Contacts
folder for the DLs. If found, you should be able to copy them.

But why can I not create new distribution lists from scratch? They don't
work either.
The message I get is "An internal support function returned an error."

Beats me, but the usual fixes are to 1) Create a new PST, make it your
delivery location, and migrate your old PST data to the new one or 2) Create
a new mail profile and point it at your existing PST.

What about reinstalling the program?

Reinstalling won't help solve configuration issues; just a corrupted
installation.

Does it work in a new profile?
Control Panel-> Mail-> button Show Profiles

If it dose configure your old pst-file with the new profile
File-> Open-> Outlook Data File...

To set it as the default delivery location;
Tools-> E-mail Accounts...-> button Next-> use the dropdownlist below

What is? Just follow the instructions. It's a step by step to complete
Brian's second suggestion. Once you've done that create a new
distributionlist and see if it works now.

I have a 48 person DL and all these people are in my Contacts. I have other
DL that work. I sent the list to myself, put the DL in BCC and hit send. It
shows in my sent mail. No one received my mail including myself. I don't
have a clue what could be wrong. Double checked the addresses and all are
good. Outlook 2003.
(I tried to start a new thread and no window would come up) No error
message. No bounces back. Guess it's in cyberspace somewhere.

I am having the same problem with Outlook 2007. Last month I upgraded from
Outlook 2003 to Outlook 2007, and the 2007 version automatically converted
all my 2003 files. However, I get the same message "An internal support
function returned an error" whenever I try to send a Media Release to a
distribution list of about 300 people.

I tried looking for the old PST files but cannot find them. Also, I have
many other smaller distribution lists and they all work fine, just this large
one that is not working. Everytime I need to send a release, I have to send
it through Outlook Express, but my distribution list in there looks much
smaller with less contacts.

Any help would be appreciated!

GillesL,
Check with your ISP, it may be limiting the number of recipients that a
single email message can have. Or have a limit how many messages, total
amount of bandwidth your email messages utilizes, per day/hour.

You may need to break that large distribution list into several smaller
ones.

I was having the same problem. Fortunately one if the ISPs of a blocked
recipient had a footnote saying that the e-mail had been addressed to 'more
than 30 people'. So I broke my distribution lists down into 29 people each!
Painful way to send to several hundred members of an organization, but it did
work.

It would be really helpful if Outlook had a way to take a small contacts
list and just make everyone on it into a distribution list. If this exists
already, then I can't find out from the Help instructions how to do that.

Stop using a DL and use a mail merge instead. Neither you nor Outlook controls what limits the ISPs put on the number of recipients for an email. Mail merges allows you to send out individualized messages with no one else's name on the email.

Post all replies to the group to keep the discussion intact. All
unsolicited mail sent to my personal account will be deleted without
reading.

After furious head scratching, Tish asked:

Thank you. That's a great suggestion. I know that others in my office do
use mail merge for our 'big' mailings so I'll go learn how to do that right
away.

How do you use mail merge to email? I have file of about 9000 to send. What
would be most practical?
Thanks,
