This morning, when I opened Outlook, I found that the format was new and that
all my contacts had been dumped.

Care to tell us how you managed to do this so others won't fall into the
same trap?
In case you were wondering, Outlook will not do this all by itself for no
reason.

I actually close all programs each night thinking that when the automatic
back-up occurs, it will work more effieciently. That's actually all that I
did.

Information trickles in.
"The format was new?"
What automatic backup?

Previously, when I opened the contacts, they were simply arranged in
alphabetic order and I could scroll through them until I found the one I
wanted. Now it asks me to type in a name to be searched and there are tabs,
arranged vertically along the right side, a-z. That's all that I can say
about "new format."

As to the automatic backup, I have an external drive, which is set up to
back up everything each evening, so if I have a hard disk crash, I have some
measure of protection for my files and programs.

I'm assuming that the relatively new addition of the external drive,
followed later by the change in format of my contacts in Outlook is simply a
coincedence. What I really need is instructions on how to retrieve contacts
that no longer show up.

Still nothing to go on.
We don't know what version of Outlook or what view you are referring to.
