Outlook automatically writing to hard drive

I just installed Office 2003 and here is my problem. About 5 minutes after
starting Outlook, the program begins to automatically start writing/accessing
my hard drive over and over. It is almost like it is caught in a loop...my
hard drive lights up twice, then a second of nothing and then it starts
again. After I manually send and receive, it stops but resumes again after 5
minutes. I have turned off everything that I know of that might be an
automated task (send receive, etc). Any ideas what is happening?

Outlook automatically attempts to compact .pst files in the background when
the system is idle and there is sufficient free space to make it worth the
effort. Maybe that's what you're seeing.

Thank you so much Sue for your response. One quick followup - Is there any
way for me to check and see if that is indeed what is happening?

Thanks again!

Check the size of the file, then come back and check it later.
