Hi all,

we have a Exch2003 server and use a cobination of Outlook2002 and
Outlook2003 clients. All the Outlook clients are configured to connect to
the Exchange server. There are no other account types defined. Outlook is
also configured to send mail immediately.

The thing we are noticing is that when sending an e-mail it seems to stay in
the users outbox for approx 1-2 minutes. If left alone it will then
dissapear after that period of time. If we click on the outbox folder though
the e-mail goes straight away. When we used to use Exchange2000 /
Outlook2002 this did not occur. As soon as we hit the send button the mail
went out straight away.

Everything seems to be running ok, just this lag when items are put in the
outbox. Any comments suggestions welcome.

regards

Craig

Hi,

we are running a mix of Win2000 SP4 and WinXP SP2. All are part of a AD
domain. The Exch2003 server is own it's own dedicated server and is just
running Exch2003, no DNS or AD duties.

With WinXP SP2, I would suspect the built-in and now on by default firwall
to interfere with new mail notifications and folder refreshes. This is
caused by a UDP datapacket not reaching the workstation from the server.

Windows 2000 SP4 on the other hand has me boggled. Are these clients
showing any problems? Anything between client and server that might
interfere with them received the UDP packet? (desktop firewall, router not
routing UDP, clients behind NAT and server on public side, .etc)

/neo

ps - the udp packet travels on an arbitrary port > 1023. only outlook 2003
lets you configure a fixed udp port (registry value is called FixedUDPPort).
Outlook 2002 gets something called forcedpolling.

Hi all,

thanks for the replies.

Our internal firewall does not block traffic internally (well not yet
anyway) , so nothing should be blocking the UDP packets, at least to the
best of my knowledge. As far as I can recall we first started to notice this
behavour with OutlookXP and Exch2000 after the last set of updates to
OfficeXP/OutlookXP. At that point I put it down to that and was not to
concerned as I knew we were going to migrate to a whole new isntallation of
Outlook2003 and Exch2003. I assumed the "problem" would go away. Fat chance
:)

As I mentioned, it's no big deal yet, and it's not as if the e-mail is stuck
or getting held up in the outbox, it's just a little disconcerting for uses
to see a message count in the outbox. I suppose I could just turn off the
folder view so that they won't see it. :)

About the only other thing I will try is installing Office2003 and see if
the problem is still there, as all of these products seem to have hooks into
each other and may be contributing to the issue.

As far as cached mode goes, I have it disabled until I learn a little more
about it. It's not something we need enabled at this point in time.

Regard,

Craig
