PLEASE HELP! I can no longer send e-mail from Outlook 97 following changes
made by BT Yahoo to prevent unauthorised use of mail servers for unsolicited
purposes like spreading Spam.

These changes relate to Server Authentication but apparently Outlook 97
doesn't require authenticated SMTP. BT's helpful(!) suggestion is that I
"contact the Microsoft vendor to upgrade Outlook email client to a different
version".

I appreciate the need to control spam, but should I really have to purchase
an upgrade to overcome a problem caused by BT Yahoo's unilateral change?

Yes, OL97 doesn't support authenticated SMTP connections

Outlook 97 does not have the ability to authenticate to the outgoing server.
You are out of luck. If you want to continue using Outlook, you'll have to
upgrade. You could probably find Outlook 98 or some later version on eBay
for an inexpensive price.
