I have a client using outlook internet mail only(no exchange) that takes
several minutes to load since about 1 week ago. it runs normal (as far as i
can see) once it is loaded. Any reason for the slow loading??

thanks

I have a similar situation dating back about two months
but it takes only 30-40 seconds for the splash screen to
disappear. If you (or anyone else out there!) gets a
handle on what is going on, I would certainly like to
hear about it.

You may have a corrupted outcmd.dat file. This is the file that stores your
toolbar customizations, and when it becomes corrupted, Outlook can't use it
at startup to build your toolbars, thus causing the hangups. Try renaming
or deleting your outcmd.dat file while Outlook is closed. Renaming it might
be the best idea if you have a lot of customizations that you'd prefer not
to lose; that way if renaming the file doesn't solve your problem, you may
be able to restore it later when you do get Outlook working properly again.

Note: If you're using Windows 2000 or XP, you'll need to search in hidden
and system folders to find the outcmd.dat file.

Wrong. Enabling "Show hidden files and folders" is enough. Enabling system
files is totally unnecessary.

I don't speak for Smiths, and Smiths doesn't speak for me.

Not that it HURTS anything to search there, but, feel free to keep
correcting me :-)

I would contend that, for someone not aware of the nature of system files,
that opening them to viewing could very well "hurt" if one were to
improperly delete some of them. Keeping them hidden is an extra protection.
One should ALWAYS use the minimum privileges needed for a task.

If you are searching for a particular filename using the Search function and
you choose to look in system folders, it's not much of a risk, IMHO -- at
least not in this particular case. Also note that I didn't suggest the o.p.
go into Folder Options and enable viewing of System folders on a global
scale.
