I am having problems defragging my Outlook 2007 .pst file. Does anyone know
if I were to move it to my external HD, then delete it from my C drive, and
then defrag my computer...would that be an answer.

More importantly, when I move it back to the proper location, would I need
to reinstall all my filters, rules etc...

This is the only soluttion I can think of to get a clean file. It is a
little over 2G at this point.

Thanks for any advice!

Regards,
Duane

2 Gig is pretty big. You will want to make very sure you have a backup.
As long as the PST is placed back where it came from and you DON'T open
Outlook while it is gone, Outlook shouldn't know it wasn't there.

You do realize, defrag will not "clean" the file? It just gathers it
up and make the parts contiguous.
To your other 'move' question, I'm reluctant to advise. There is always
the chance that a simple fix will go astray. I used to reload/transfer
laptops and move the pst file to the server, reload, then copy it back.
Never lost a setting or mail. But, maybe I lucked out. I would
try to figure out why you can't defrag it. Its just a file, big, but
no less than some of the DVD iso files I have that degrag. Maybe you
don't have a lot of free space on the drive? Maybe its busy? We have
so little info to work on its hard to advise.

PS, if you move it to the external HD and defrag C, there is no
assurance that it will go back on the C and be defragged. It may
become more fragmented after the restore than it is now. Still I'm
back to the "who cares" question. I have 100's of fragmented files on
my pc right now. You can't stop it.

Open Outlook, Personal Folders>Properties>Compact
Not that you need to concern yourself about trying to defrag

Two points:

1. Note that defragging does not make a file smaller. It rearranges the
contents of a drive so that all the pieces of a file are contiguous.

2. If you're looking for help with Outlook, the Windows General newsgroup,
where you are now isn't a good place to ask. You would be much more likely
to get good help if you would ask in the Outlook newsgroup. That's where the
Outlook experts hang out.
