Since April 1st, I have been having trouble opening some of my incoming
email messages in Outlook 2007.

The error messages reads as follows:

Microsoft Office Outlook Connector

We could not check the message you are trying to open for viruses because
the virus check engine reported an error. To open the unchecked message,
click OK.

Do not check for viruses until the virus check engine is available.

How do I fix this issue?

Thanks
TJ

TJ, I and others have been troubled by the very same issue. So far I've been
unable to get good advice for a fix. I think this has come about thru an
Office update but I have nothing to back that up. I have taken several steps
to fix and tried some advice from this discussion group as well. Take a look
at your message catagories and see if you also have an "infected items file".
This popped up april 1st too. I was running "Windows Live One Care" for AV
and installed ESET NOD 32 to try to fix it to no avail. This needs to go up
to the update engineers at MS for a fix.

Hi B.Scott
Thank you for sharing your experiences with me. I tried taking my issue to
McAfee antivirus (which is installed on my system) but they were perplexed
and dumbfounded at my issue. They were unable to generate any leads. If you
find anything out please le me know. Thanks.
I am a little lost with your request to look in the message catagories to
see if I have an "infected items file." How do I begin to look for this?

Thanks
TJ

TJ,
When outlook is open, the left pane contains your mail folders such as,
deleted items, drafts, inbox, junk mail and etc... I'm running two email
accounts thru it and both now have this (infected items) folder.

You indicated in an earlier message that this is a Live account. If that
correct? Perhaps the problem is on the Live server and not an Outlook
problem. Outlook does not create any "Infected Items" folder ever.

No, I said that I was using "Windows Live OneCare" for AV. I have since
deleted that and installed Eset NOD 32 for AV in an attempt to solve the
issue recommended by my local rent-a-geek. I use msn accounts in Outlook.
Here are the facts as I know them;

The virus check engine error message issue began on April 1.
It occurs on some but not all messages.
If I open the e-mail messages quickly upon starting outlook, they open
without the error message. Then, after about one minute the same e-mail
messages will then get the error message.
Disabling AV-uninstalling/reinstalling AV w/o scanning feature for email
does not change it.
It happens on my home network and my office network.
Running a "search" on all files and folders containing (virus check engine)
comes up with nothing.

In addition, the message folder pane on the left in Outlook now has a
mysterious "infected items" folder.

Sorry. I thought in another thread you had said you were using a Hotmail
account. My mistake.
