Outlook 2003 won't restart after use

I can use Outlook once, but once I close, I cannot reopen until I log out or
restart the application. Have new Dell 600m with XP Pro. Any ideas?

Do you have any 3rd party applications installed that use/sync with Outlook
data? (e.g. WinFax, PDA, .etc) The reason that I ask is that Outlook might
be running in the background and something has it tied up where it can't
display a user interface.

I connect to a VPN that syncs at startup, but no other 3rd party applications
installed. It is always fine on first startup, but have to log off/restart to
get it to work again. Thanks.

When it won't start, bring up the task manager and see if Outlook is in the
process list. Task manager is taskmgr.exe.

Task Manager shows nothing running. When I click on the Outlook icon, or try
to run it from Programs, the hourglass shows for a couple of seconds like it
is trying to start, and then the hourglass goes away and I am still at the
desktop. The only thing different from my laptop and my desktop computer with
similar software is that I have McAfee Privacy Service on the laptop, but
that shouldn't be causing the problem.(?)

Are you looking at the applications or processes tab? (you should look at
the processes tab)

I haven't used McAfee products in over 7 years, so anything is possible.
The other thing that we could try is a freeware tool called knockout
http://sunflowerhead.com/software/knockout/. It will let you see easily if
Outlook is still resident after you think it has been closed.

If I try twice to open Outlook and then try to log off windows, it shows that
CiceroUIWndFrame program is still running and I have to end task to get it to
shutdown. I also get an application error "tfswctrl.exe" The instruction at
"0x7c91519d" referenced memory at "0x0013000c". The memory could not be
"read". After hitting ok, I get a "rng.exe - DLL initialization Failed. The
application failed to intialize because the window..." the window went away
before I could Don't know if that is of any help.

I looked in the processes under Taskmanager, and Outlook.exe appears twice,
one with 18M+ of mem usage and the other 1.7M mem usage.

Installed sunflowerhead knockout, and it says Outlook is running after I shut
it down (Word, too, but Work can reopen). So when I terminate it with
knockout, I can reopen Outlook with shutting down. Bravo! It is sort of a
bandaid, but it will make life much easier. Thank you.

I use a philips CDRW/DVD.

After one use of Outlook, I just noticed that the Outlook icon remained in
the notifications area and when clicked it says the MS Exchange Server is
looking for pending server requests and that I can cancel server requests by
clicking the Outlook icon in the notifications area and then clicking Cancel
Server Requests on the shortcut menu. Unfortunately, I just get the above
message when I click on the icon in the notif. area, so I am not sure how
else to cancel server requests. Any help?

right click on the outlook icon in the notification area. it should bring
up a context menu so you can pick cancel.

Wish I could. Right click does absolutely nothing, and left click gives me
the message described in previous post.

Hi. Did you find a solution to this? I have 1 station, XP Pro SP1 that is
doing the same thing, once she closes outlook she has to restart to be able
to open it again. I'm going to try the bandaid you mentioned but was hoping
for a permanent solution. Thanks for any help.

It sounds like what is actually happening is that Outlook isn't closing
properly and so can't restart properly, there already being an instance of
it running. See if these help: http://www.slipstick.com/problems/close.htm

You're an angel! The first site's fix worked! It was the Winfax log file.
It's all better now and working like a charm. Thanks so much!
