I have just upgraded to Office 2003 and am having issues with Outlook 2003.
Whenever I quit the program, the process is still running in the background
(using Win XP HE).

I have looked on the MSKB and all I find is the following load of rubbish
that tells me nothing other than "opps we found another bug in the program
but cant tell you how to fix it properly" (yes I am being sarcastic
Microsoft!!):

Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 827408
Outlook 2003 Stops Responding When You Try to Quit
Applies To
SYMPTOMS
When you try to quit Microsoft Office Outlook 2003, the program may stop
responding.
CAUSE
This problem occurs when you have connected to your network through a
network connection that is different from the one
that Outlook 2003 is configured to use. Outlook 2003 waits for certain
processes to end; however, these processes cannot
start because the incorrect network connection was active when Outlook 2003
was started.
WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, you must log off from your first network
connection, and then log on to the network connection
that Outlook 2003 is configured to use.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products
that are listed in the "Applies to" section of this

Can anyone out there offer better advice on how to cure the problem as the
only way out is to force the process to end via task manager and the Outlook
will not run again until after a reboot. I use broadband thus how can I log
off!!!

Have you alrwady recreated your mail profile after the upgrade? Control
Panel-> Mail-> button Show Pofiles...

Also are you running any software that integrates with Outlook like
synchronisation software? Closing that software will release the Outlook.exe
process so it can close completely.

Tips of the month:
-Creating Signatures
-Create an Office XP CD slipstreamed with Service Pack 3

I use Norton Anti-Spam. The spam feature of 2003 is too limited in that you
can only add e-mail addresses and not actual phrases that spammers use. The
lack of the latter make the spam feature of 2003 practically useless.

I should also add that I have switched off Anti-Spam and removed the plug-in
from Outlook and it has made no difference whatsoever. Looks like I am
going to have to rip out Office 2003 and return it to the shop for a refund
as being a useless software package, then go back to Office XP, at least
this one worked fine !!

Sorry you feel that way as it works as a charm for anybody else. So far
we've been able to solve all the "Outlook doesn't close" issues here.

Have you already recreated the mail profile as I suggested? Also make sure
your Norton Anti-Spam add-in is Outlook 2003 compatible and up-to-date.

The answer has been found (yippee!!)

Just an extra bit of FYI. Having changed starup sevice status in varying
orders from auto to manual, I have located the source of the problem and it
is now cured.

In a nutshell, if anyone is using WinFax Pro, here lays the problem. Having
changed the startup from Automatic to manual and also turned off the
Outlook/E-Mail integration inWinFax preferences, Outlook 2003 is now working
a treat (with Anti-Virus and Anti-Spam switched on).

Sorry if I seemed a bit stroppy in previous messages regards Microsoft, but
they do have a habit of releasing software with bugs intact in most cases
(hence they are the easiest to blame!)

Darren

I have the same problem on a couple of systems... The
OUTLOOK.EXE process will not end when the user ends the
main program. (By using exit from the menu).

The icon stays in the system tray.

A new Outlook session can not be started without killing
the original process trough taksmanager or by logging of
the system.

The machines experiencing the problem are "plain vanilla"
systems (Think Pad's, Generic AMD's and HP Deskpros) with
XP Pro & Office 2003 Pro.

None of them are running any "sync" software or add-ins.

It seems like only users who have enabled cached mode do
experience this problem.

Please see post related "Solution-Outlook not terminating/Outlook remains in system tray" dated 7/9.

Thanks,
Adarsh

Where do you find the Winfax in the startup services to change from automatic
to manual. I am experiencing the same problems..

Thanks
