Outlook 2003 reading pane updates very slowly

Sometimes in Outlook 2003, when I'm reading emails, clicking on a newly
arrived email will not show the content in the reading window for at least 20
seconds. If I right click the email, the content appears in the reading
window immediately. This seems to apply mainly to new messages but now and
then it happens to old ones.

Can anyone help, this is driving me crazy?!

The first thing to try is to disable IM integration at the bottom of
Tools>Options>Other.

Tried that and it didn't make a difference. Is there anything else I can try
to get rid of this problem?

You can try a new mail profile, pointing it at your existing data store.
You can try deleting or renaming %AppData%\Microsoft\Outlook\outcmd.dat
(with Outlook closed) and let it be recreated. Other than that, I have no
ideas.
