Outlook 2003 - Problem Accessing Outlook News

J.R.

I previously (and still have but not always use) have been using Outlook
Express 6 for both my email and news needs. However, after getting Office
2003 and liking the anti-spam features, I decided to use Outlook 2003.

I followed the Help screen's instructions to put NEWS in my GO menu, and it
shows up. Sometimes.

Whenever I check my news using Outlook News, and then close Outlook and
Outlook News (maybe shut down for the night?) and re-open again later, the
item "News" will not be present in my GO menu anymore and it is not present
in the Tools > Customise menu for me to add back on to it.

The only way around this problem so far is to open OUTLOOK EXPRESS, and
click "Yes" to making it the default news viewer. If this happens, the next
time I load Outlook 2003 the "News" option will be in the "Go" menu again.
This becomes frustrating because I download half my news with one program
and half with another!

I want to be able to view my news every time with Outlook News. Any
suggestions or solutions, please?

J.R.

To get the News command back, go back to the Programs tab in Control Panel |
Internet Options and change the default newsreader to Outlook Express. If
OE prompts you to make it your default newsreader the next time you launch
it, click the "Don't ask me again" box and then click the No button.

Unfortunately, this solution does not appear to work, for several reasons:

1. I can change the default enwsreader to Outlook Express in the Control
Panel but that is the ONLY option, there's no "Outlook News" option.

2. After switching in the control panel I have the News option back, but
after I close Outlook and re-open I no longer have it.

3. So I then go to Outlook Express. It asked me whether i want to make it my
default reader. There was NO "do not ask me again" checkbox. I clicked No
anyway.

4. "News" button still not present in Outlook 2003.

Sorry! :( Any other suggestions?

OE is supposed to be the only option in Control Panel.

If you weren't prompted by OE to make it the default, then it was probably
already set as the default. Open OE and go to Tools > Options > and make
sure it is NOT set as the default in the program itself.
Then reset your Toolbars in Outlook.

If OE prompts you to make it your default newsreader the
next time you launch
it, click the "Don't ask me again" box and then click the
NO button.(VERY IMPORTANT)
There is a Dont Ask Button and a "Do You want to make
Outlook your default news reader button"
Notre it asks about Outlook not OExpress and the answer to
that question must be NO.

Then follow the Help instructions for placing a Button on
the Button Bar.
You may need to reset the Menu Bar and/or restart Outlook
and/or reboot your
machine in order to complete the process. Not everyone is
reporting
success
There is no OUTLOOK News reader Express is still the only
way.
This problem is posted every second day and is known to MS.
Why the donot post a Knowledge Base Item only BG knows.

Odd. The solution works for the vast majority. Can you provide more
information about your installation sequence and migration form OE to
Outlook?
Try creating a new profile in Outlook and see if you can get things to work
there.
