Outlook 2003 Phantom IMAP Account

I deleted four IMAP accounts out of seven from Outlook 2003. The four
deleted accounts immediately disappeared from "Favorite Folders" but they
still appear in my "All Mail Folders" view.

This is strange and bothersome. The deleted accounts not not have .pst
files. They do not appear in theTOOLS|Email Accounts (where I deleted them
from).

When I click on the account to try to delete it I get this error message:

"The Set of Folders Could Not be Opened."

Then I click on "show help" and get an inane message about running the scan
program, et al that I already did and no extra help is forthcoming.

How can I get rid of these Phantom accounts? Are they somehow being cached
somewhere?

it's easiest to create a new profile - otherwise you need to search the
messaging subsystem key in the registry and delete the keys that have values
that reference those pst's. If you screw up, you'll definitely need a new
profile. :)

The keys are under your profile at
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows
Messaging Subsystem\Profiles

Hi Diane --

Thank you for the fast reply.

What are the steps to creating a new profile? Can I then delete my current
corrupted profile?

Will I lose my current Contacts and Calendar when I create a new profile?

Hi Diane --

Thanks for the URL.

I actually did the RegEdit route and found tremendous success! Problem
solved! Thanks!

What causes Outlook 2003 to not properly delete Phantom accounts? Is it an
IMAP problem or does it happen with POP3 as well?

it's more common with imap and http, I'm not sure why, except that they use
their own message store.

In your situation, editing the registry is fairly safe since the errant
entries are unique. In the other source of ghosts (duplicate stores) it's
harder to delete the correct key.
