I was just upgraded to Outlook 2003. Some days every command takes 1 to 2
minutes to execute, other days it is one to 2 seconds. When it is slow I see
a message on the taskbar(?) that says something like "Updating Deleted Items
Folder. Updating Inbox". There is an icon that says "Microsoft Office Outlook
is synchronizong folders" on my toolbar. My archive.pst folder is 382 MB and
is on my LAN. Please recommend way(s) to fix this problem.

Try moving your offline file and any .pst files you are using to your local
machine, or a server that is on the same network.

I have seen multiple issues with Outlook accessing .pst files that are
located off-site dragging Outlook to a crawl.

Thanks. Can you give me specific instructions for doing so? Is it as simple
as copying the file to my C drive and cjanging the addess in the Archive
instructions to the new location?

Should be.
First find where your .pst files are located.
Right click on the folder and select Properties for...
Click the Advanced... button
"File Name:" will tell you where the .pst is stored.
Jot those locations down.
Make sure your .ost is stored on your local dirve.
Right click on your mail box and select Properties for...
Click the Advanced... button.
Select the Advanced tab.
Select Offline Folder File Settings...
"File" will tell you where it is stored.

I would then close Outlook and reboot the machine to make sure Outlook is
not running.

Then copy the .pst files to a folder on your local machine.
Close the .pst files that are open and then open the ones on your local drive.

Hope this helps.
Hope I didn't miss anything...

Rob,

I'm making some progress. I created a folder on my c drive and copied my
archive.pst file to it. I then hit Tools-Options-AutoArchive and changed the
Move Old Items to the C: drive folder. I then auto-archived now and the C
drive archive.pst is now larger than the old network file. And best yet,
Outlook is working at normal speed.

However, in my folder list there are now two Archive Folders. When I hit
Properties-Advanced one of the folders has the old filename and the other the
new C: filename. Unfortunately, the old filename folder has a + next to it
and allows me to open the subfolders. When I try to expand the new archive
folder, I get an error message "Unable to expand the folder. Could not open
the item. Try again." Any suggestions?
