Outlook 2003 on Win XP Home SP1 memory error on exit

1) On exiting Outlook 2003 I get an error message: "Direction(?) at
0x0246q9fe made a referrence to memory at 0x027d2090. Memory could not be
"read" [translation may not be accurate]. I have to click OK to end program.
What might be causing this?

2) I tried to disable Win Messenger - according to Microsoft official
instructions - but I found referrence only to Outlook 2002 - not 2003! How
can I disable it from running when Outlook starts? I have added a
PreventRun"=dword:00000001 key in the registry and it removed Messenger from
the taskbar - might it be responsible for #1 error message?

TIA
M.

Undo your changes and see if it still occurs. Messenger integration can be
disabled by going to Tools-> Options-> tab Other

Returned registry to default settings. [I did not enable Win Messenger for
Outlook Express, I don't think it can have anything to do with Outlook
problems.] The problem persists. Then I unchecked everything in the
Messenger Options - still no cure...
Also, I still don't see any option for Windows Messenger in the "Other"
options in Outlook - I never did anything there. There is only the option
for smart-tags for contacts and this is unchecked.

Yes, that is the only integration it has for Messenger.

You still get your error on exit? Are you running any Outlook add-ins? Also
have you applied Service Pack 1 for Office already?

Tips of the month:
-What do the Outlook Icons Mean?
-Create an Office 2003 CD slipstreamed with Service Pack 1

Version: MS Office Outlook 2003 (11.6359.6360) SP1 - Greek interface (all
updates, to my knowledge, are applied).

I also have installed the Business Contact Manager (does this qualify as an
add-in?). It popped up a splash screen asking me to start using it, but I
don't want it yet, I have many things to configure first in this new
machine. So I cancelled the pop-up screen and I plan to tackle this when I
am ready. Might it this be the problem?

Norton AV 2005 is used to scan emails & worm protection - but I've never
used Outlook for email yet. Also I have not noticed Outlook to try access
the Internet (in ZoneAlarm Pro) although it is permitted.

For the time being I use OE for email & ngs and Outlook as a personal
organizer because it syncs with PDA & cell phone. I have configured OE to
share contacts with Outlook (by adding a UseOutlook DWORD value=1 in the
wab4 field of current user software in the registry - this is unsupported
by Microsoft, I am afraid - it might affect OE if anything, but Outlook?
They are never both open at the same time. Also the error started long after
I did this).

I some times have two *.pst files open - anything in that? The error pops-up
the same.

I might uninstall Office and install it again - but I wonder how many
activations are available? (I had the motherboard of this brand new PC
changed due to malfuction and Office might think this a different PC).

BTW: The message says (correctly translated this time): "The instruction at
"0x025aa9fe" made a reference in memory at "0x02912090". Memory could not be
"read". Click OK to end program." The program has no problem closing when I
click.

It does not affect anything much, really , but it is annoying just not being
able to fix it! - and not to know where to start!

Disable the integration of the virusscanner with Outlook. Usually you can
configure this in the Norton settings.
Does it also occur when you use Outlook in safe mode?
Start-> Run; "path to outlook.exe" /safe

What is logged to the Event Viewer?

Robert, many thanks for your support.
Disable the integration of the virusscanner with Outlook. Usually you can
configure this in the Norton settings.

Problem persists (anyway is this safe?)
Does it also occur when you use Outlook in safe mode?
Start-> Run; "path to outlook.exe" /safe

No, it does not! (and of course nothing in Event Viewer) Could I always
start Outlook in safe mode? Is it going to run properly like this?
What is logged to the Event Viewer?
(Lets hope it translates correctly):
[in System] (only)
Source: Application pop-up
Type: Information
Category: none
Event ID: 26
Description: Popping-up application: OUTLOOK.EXE. Application error: The
instruction at 0x025aa9fe made a reference in memory at 0x02912090. Memory
could not be "read". Click OK to end program.
For further information visit Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
The information sent there states:
Event ID: 26
File version: 5.1.2600.2180
Product version: 5.1.2600.2180
Company name: Microsoft Corporation
Date: 12 14 2004
Category: None
File name: ntdll.dll
Product name: Microsoft Windows OS
Source: Application Pop-up
Type: Information
Time: (when it last happened).

When I go to this page it says there is no further info.

In ntdll.dll file properties (the one in system32 folder) it says its
version is "xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158", date 9/4/2004, language Greek. I take
it this was installed with SP2 - but the problem appeared before this!

M.

The fact that it works in safe mode usually refers to add-in issues or
corrupted files. Although this article is written for Outlook startup issues
it is also usefull in your situation to troubleshoot your issue;

Did as per instructions - except for #2 (it seems there's no outcmd.dat file
anywhere?!) and #5 (there were no COM add-ins). The thing persists! :(

The problem seems to have stopped! All I did was restore a former version of
the extend.dat file from an older backup!

[BTW I always see hidden files... and I still cannot locate any outcmd.dat
file anywhere in \Documents and Settings\user\Application
Data\Microsoft\Outlook or elsewhere...]

Many thanks for your help and support and best wishes

M.

Even better would be to just delete the restored extend.dat file and have
Outlook create a new one. Extend.dat holds only a cache of the add-ins
settings made in the registry and will then just recreate the file for you.

Outcmd.dat should be there indeed. This file holds Toolbar settings. Does it
show up when you make a toolbar customization and does this customization
stick when you restart Outlook?

Best wishes to you too! :-)

Now it is there indeed - I never tried to change Toolbar settings... ( this
is a new machine) and I am new to Win XP and Office 2003 - and still feel at
a loss...

Many thanks
