Outlook 2003 not responding after exiting

I have recently installed outlook 2003 on windows XP
professional sp1 and have configured my hotmail account
in outlook 2003

After I boot my machine and start outlook 2003 I can send
and receive e-mails for my hotmail account via outlook
2003 without any issues. However when I exit outlook it
seems to exit but the outlook icon continues to remain in
the systray and when I bring up the task manager in the
process tab outlook.exe still shows up as a process
consuming memory and in the application tab it shows that
outlook is not responding so it seems like outlook did
not shutdown properly and I have to use the task manager
to end the task. After ending the task when I try to
start outlook 2003 again the application does not respond
and I can no longer connect to hotmail via outlook 2003.
I have to restart my machine again to be able to get to
hotmail via outlook and then again if I close outlook the
same problem keeps on occurring. I have re-installed
outlook 2003 umerous times but have had no luck so far.

I'll appreciate if anyone could shed some light on what
could be wrong and how to fix this.

Thanks!!

I am having the exact same problem. Please help. I have to reboot
everytime I want to close outlook and then open it again.

To add some mystery to this, it works fine, when I Logon to the computer as
my wife. This is ONLY happening when I logon to the computer as me.

Is it related to the setting to synchronize the accounts when exiting? Does
it still hang if you tell OL not to do that?

I did not see anything about synchronizing on exit. I told it to turn off
check mail when offiline and that did not work. This is becoming very
frustrating.

Tools > Options > Mail Setup > Send/Receive is where the 'synchronize on
exit' setting is. I'm just guessing - I mean, even if this is checked it
obviously shouldn't cause the program to hang.

Although for me it's not hanging, I'm having trouble making OL synchronize
ONLY when I tell it to. Right now it synchronizes everytime I click on the
folder (which slows things down) and it doesn't seem to be checking for new
messages every fifteen minutes like it should be.

I think the problem definitely has something to do with the way the user first logs on to Windows XP. Here is what I have done and the problem seems to have gone away.

Go to Control Panel.
Click on User Accounts and then click on Change the way users log on or off.
Disable the Use Welcome screen option.
Restart the machine.

After I did the above the problem seems to have gone and outlook 2003 is exiting normally. I don't think this is the correct fix as I am sure users who have multiple users for the same m/c will not like this workaround, but hopefully this gives some more insight on where the problem is.

If anyone is aware of any other way to fix this, please share it with the community.

Thanks!

Well, I had to resort to deleting and re-creating my user profile in
Windows. It seems to be working ok now.

Had same problem. My wife didn't. Was able to resolve it.

This is what I tried:
1. Created new temp basic profile - Outlook was closing
successfully
2. Copied original profile to new one - Outlook wasn't
closing properly
3. Removed "Winfax Logs" Data File from my original
profile - it worked.
(Control Panel, Mail, Show Profiles, Properties, Data
Files)

Some things to try can be removing data files and re-
adding them.. In my case, the Winfax Logs data file
said "Not Available"

Funny how much of a major inconvenience a little problem
such as this can be...

Hope this helps everyone,
Steve

Hey steve, I've been having the same problems, and your solution -
remove the WinFax Logs data file - seems to have done the trick. Yet
again, Symantec manages to make a mess of things... (like Microsoft
needs the help!)
