I have tried changing the filtering options and in any case i cannot
see any items listed in the folder. The folder shows the number of
unread messages and the folder and the "Junk E-mail" title is in bold
but when I open the folder "There are no items to show in this view"
is the only thing shown in the message pane. I connot view any of the
messages in the Junk E-mail folder to see if any messages I need have
been filtered there. Is there some setting to be changed to view the
items in this folder?

Check your view of the folder.

Post all replies to the group to keep the discussion intact. Due to
the (insert latest virus name here) virus, all mail sent to my personal
account will be deleted without reading.

After furious head scratching, LuGnuT asked:

Click on the header where it says Arrange By, then choose Custom, then Reset
current view button.
