My company is planning on upgrading to Office 2003 (including Outlook 2003) and leaving our Exchange 2000 server as is. Is it necessary or required to run Outlook 2003 in cached mode in this scenario?

It's never necessary to run in cached mode, but I've found it handy.

Necessary or required are the wrong terms if you ask me. "Possible" would be
better. "Recommended" is also a good one if your users are mainly using the
same PC. They would have the benefits of faster responds times (especially
in large Exchange organizations) and a client side Junk E-mail Filter.

The document below is a "must read" for anyone who is about to
deploy Outlook 2003. It details when to use cache mode and when
it may not be optimal for the client, such as if you use delegates.

Hockeychick,

Client Side rules will not work in offline mode. They will in online
and cached modes. That's the only "requirement" I know. Otherwise,
cached mode is great.
