Outlook 2003 and Windows Mail POP3 issue

Hi,

I've been struggling to get either of these to download from my POP3 provider.

It seems that the download process gets part of the way. It retrieves the
headers and displays the number of messages to download and the total size of
the download. It then manages to download 1 (or two) small messaged. The
important thing to notice is that it is "small" messages. If there are larger
messages or messages with attachments it'll always fail, timing out.

Watching the status it seems to download about 1 kb and then takes a long
time and then downloads the next piece. The process then fails.

I've tested various connections, reported to the ISP and searched the
Internet and found nothing. What can I do?

I have had similar issues with my mail when I receive a corrupt mail. In the
past the cure has been either to access my mail via a web based route, most
ISPs offer this, and clean out messages or to have my ISP wipe clean the
mailbox. I have seen corrupt mailboxes do the same. The last suggestion is
rather drastic since you will lose mail but just offering a thought.

Thanks for the idea - sadly didn't work.

I also asked the ISP for help - inetc - and they shrug any responsibility
quoting the BETA status.

Turn off any third party software that scans your email, particularly spam
killers, and the scan mail option in your AV program, it serves no useful
purpose and is known to cause this type of problem along with much worse.
You will still be protected, just keep the definitions up to date as normal.

Thanks Mac,

I've removed my Symantec scanner and I don't have anything else that scans -
that was my first port of call :)

Then all that I can offer, is that you re-visit the web mail site of your
ISP and remove the large message that is causing the problem?
Or In WM>Tools>Accounts>Mail>Properties>Advanced, move the Time-out slider

I have the same problem in my Microsoft Outlook 2007 running on Vista Basic
32 bit. Any solutions??

I have been looking and notice many people have been having this issue. I
want to contribute some logs from remote servers to hopefully help.

I saw the following in this morning's daily report.
Expunge ignored on readonly mailbox: 165 Time(s)
Error opening or locking INBOX user=mhale
host=myhost [x.x.x.x]: 165 Time(s)
Mailbox is open by another process, access is readonly: 165 Time(s)
Connection reset by peer while reading line user=johndoe
host=my.hostname [x.x.x.x]: 1 Time(s)

Please note that like other users, this account along with the other account
I'm having problems with worked just fine before upgrading to vista.

I'm running Outlook 2007 RTM and having the same problem. The problem did not
appear until after installing Vista. Here is what I've done so far to try and
resolve the issue:

Disabled antivirus software and uninstalled it
turned off the firewall
tried using both outlook 2007 and the Vista mail client (outlook express)
went to the two sites where I'm trying to get email from and deleting all my
email via webmail.
I set the timeout sliders higher which should not be required but is and it
just causes Outlook to sit there longer trying to download mail. It'll take 1
minutes just to get 30-40k worth of email.

I have came to the conclusion that it is an issue within Vista based on the
following:

No 3rd party scanners are on including defender, the firewall is off and it
happens with two email clients.

I hope Microsoft can confirm this and maybe start looking at a fix.

This newsgroup deals mainly with Vista's Windows Mail program.

Thanks for your quick reply. But I face this problem both in Outlook and
Windows mail, so it seems the problem is due to Vista. There is no problem in
my XP machine.
