Outlook 2003 and orphaned .ost

Is there any way to recover the email from a .ost file once the "link"
to the profile is broken? Here's the case...

I left a company that I was working for before I converted my .ost over
into a .pst. Like a moron, I completely forgot this little detail
before I switched my laptop from their domain to my home workgroup again.

Now the domain login that I had with the company is obviously broken,
but I can still obviously see the .ost file within my directory structure.

Now I know there's Exchange Recover from the one company, however, as a
humble contractor/consultant, there's no way I can afford the $600 for a
single seat license.

Is there any hpoe at all for me? Or am I going to pay the price for a
moment of stupidity?

There is no other way besides asking the company if they can perform a
restore for you.

This is an unacceptable answer. When is Microsoft going
to build a tool for converting an orphaned OST to a PST?
We need an official answer from Microsoft because I just
had my Exchange Server fail and upon building it up again,
a new OST was created and I cannot get to my historical
emails nor contacts. What gives? This is a major product
bug.

No, it is not a bug, it is a security feature. Having the .ost connected to
Exchange via a SID is a good thing. Only the shortsighted would see it
otherwise.

I, for one, hope it stays exactly as it is. No need for a change from my
perspective.

Otherwise, you can pay the $600 for the Exchange Recovery tool

Hello, this is a bug. I have lost my ability to recover
prior email and all of my Outlook contents. No warning.
Just a broken server. I would never have switched to
cached mode if I knew that I was at such risk. I should
be able to at least recover the OST folder using some sort
of rights. While I appreciate your view from a security
perspective, it is unacceptable from an administrator or
user perspective.

I as an administrator have to look at it from a security perspective.
I as a user like it that the administrator takes care of my security.

Note that you trew away a cache file not the original or a back-up. The
original is still at the server and if not it would at least be on a back-up
tape.

I'm not sure if you are the original poster and if so you changed your
story. The orignal posting was about a "**** up" of not saving mail before
leaving a company. This has got nothing to do with switching to cache mode
and I fail to see the "risk" here. The use of a ost-file is safe as you
experienced yourself.

No its not a bug. Legally the date that is in the ost and the exchange
server is typically the property of the company that you had the data stored
with. If you leave or are terminated it is at their discression as to if
you can take that data with you. This is a security feature to protect a
companys intrests.
