Your Outlook Password Is Not Retained in Windows XP
SYMPTOMS
When you run Outlook using Microsoft Windows XP and
connect to your Internet Service Provider (ISP) to
retrieve e-mail messages from a Post Office Protocol (POP)
server, your password is not retained even though you have
chosen to save it.
CAUSE
The registry contains incorrect information for the
Protected Storage System Provider registry subkey for your
account.
RESOLUTION
To save your password you must back up your registry,
remove the user account information, and then re-enter
your password. Only people who are members of the
Administrators group on the local computer can make these
changes.
WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may
cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall
your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you
can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor
incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
1. Quit all programs.
Back up the Registry
2. Click Start, click Run, type regedt32 in the Open
box, and then click OK.
3. Locate and click the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Protected Storage
System Provider
NOTE: Click on HKEY_CURRENT_USER then Software then
Microsoft then Protected Storage System Provider
4. On the File menu, click Export.
5. In the File name box, type a unique name for the
key.
6. In the Save In box, click a location for the file,
and then click Save.
7. On the Edit menu, click Permissions.
8. Click the Users (Asset#\Users), this is the user
that is currently logged on.
9. Check the box directly below Allow and across from
Full Control.
10. Click to select the Replace permission entries on
all child objects with entries shown here that apply to
child objects check box.
11. Click Apply, and then click Yes when you receive a
prompt to continue.
12. Click OK, and then click OK again.
13. Double-click the Protected Storage System Provider
key to expand the key, click the user subkey folder that
is directly below the Protected Storage System Provider
key, click Delete on the Edit menu, and then click Yes in
the warning message dialog box. ((DO NOT DELETE BOTH of
these entries, JUST the top one.))
The user subkey folder looks similar to the following
example:

14. On the Registry menu, click Exit, and then restart
your computer.
Re-Enter Your Password
1. Start Outlook.
NOTE: If you receive a login error, close the dialog box
and proceed.
2. Click Tools, and then click E-mail Accounts.
3. Click the radio button for Add new e-mail account,
and then click Next.
4. On the Server Type window click the radio button
for POP3, and then click Next.
5. On the Internet E-Mail Settings (POP3) window,
complete all the user information.
NOTE: Use these guidelines: Your Name is the users full
name, First and Last. E-mail Address can be the users
alias E-mail address (generally first initial + middle
initial + the first 4 letters of the last name +
@cesco.com) OR the users E-mail account name + @cesco.com.
Incoming mail server (POP3) is email.cesco.com the
Outgoing mail server (POP3) is also email.cesco.com. For
Logon Information the User Name is the E-mail account name
(generally first initial + middle initial + the first 4
letters of the last name - all in LOWER CASE). Type the
password in the Password box, and then click the box to
place a check in the box to select Remember password
dialog box.
6. Click the Test Account Settings. button.
NOTE: A window will open and begin testing your account
settings. If the previous screen was completed and you
are connected to the network all Tasks with show a status
of Completed. If you do not get all Tasks to COMPLETE
successfully go back to the previous screen and check for
problems.
7. Click Close.
8. Click Next
9. Click Finish
10. Close Outlook and then restart it.
11. On the Tools menu, click Send and Receive to test
if your password is retained.
