Outlook 2002 Seems to Choke on Attachments

This will be quite long, so please forgive me.

Outlook works fine when I view a regular e-mail in the
preview pane, but when I click on a message with an
attachment it hangs. I have gone through several
gyrations testing this and it occurs with any e-mail that
has an attachment. I can read every normal mail in any of
my personal folders, but when I click on a message with an
attachment the program hangs. This only began happening
last week, but nothing has happened on my system, i.e.,
new installs, reconfiguration.

Here is what I have tried:
1. Tried turning off the Preview Pane.
2. Tried deleting the last e-mail that I received with an
attachment.
3. Compacted the database
4. Repaired the database
5. Moved and renamed the database and let Outlook build
another
6. Ran the Office CD Repair tool
7. Uninstalled Outlook and reinstalled
8. Installed all available patches

Any help would be very welcome. I really think that I
need to remove all Outlook related items from the computer
and reinstall, but he Remove option on the CD doesn't seem
to completely removed everything (my settings are still
there when I run Outlook.) Please help. I'm using OE
right now, but would reall prefer to run Outlook, since I
purchased it.

Please send replies via e-mail to (e-mail address removed).

Thanks,
Benny

Have you tried emptying your Temporary Internet Files cache?

Boy, I'm glad to know its not just me.

I thought the problem was due to installing ACT! and ACT!
for Palm, but I have uninstalled both. I also went back
to a previous "checkpoint" and restored, but to no avail.
I wonder if this is due to a security update that will
not allow attachments. (Mine locks on any mail with
attachments, also, but will occasionally hang up just for
fun.)

Sorry this isn't a fix, but maybe with more than one
reporting, a response will be forthcoming.

Yes, I have, but still does not work.

I have the same problem but it only hangs on SOME e-mails
with attachments. In my case, I turn off my Norton Anti-
Virus and then I am able to view all messages including
messages with attachments. I have also read in previous
posts that WinFax can cause it to hang also. I haven't
had any problems with this, but I have an older version
of WinFax (Pro v9.0) and I don't automatically start the
WinFax program and close the program after use.

Of course turning off the anti-virus is very dangerous
especially due to the new virus going around.
Unfortunately, I have posted similar posts with no
answers yet. If any of you get a better solution please
post the answer here or e-mail me if you have time.

No, it's not. All you want to do is to turn off your antivirus integration
with mail. You still leave your scanner going so that it detects viruses
when you save them to disk.
