Greetings!

I am using Outlook 2002 (10.3513.3501) SP1.

I can add a rule with no problem. However, once the rule is added, three
things are apparent:

1) I can NOT modify the rule. The ONLY way to do ANYTHING with that rule is
to use the DELETE key.

2) If I try to RUN RULE NOW, NO rules show up in the list.

3) The rule does not work. I have a simple rule that looks for a specific
inbound e-mail address and moves it to a folder.

This is very, very, very frustrating. I have had numerous problems with
Outlook since version 2000 came out and I'm thinking about moving back to
Eudora, that's how bad this program is. I've run Detect and Fix which did
not fix the problem.

Also, I tried to import rules from Outlook 2003 (XP) and that did not work
either.

Any MVP's out there that know ANYTHING about rules? I see lots of rules
questions that are NOT being answered on this public forum. Is this an area
that Microsoft supports?

Sorry about blowing off some steam, but I get over 300 emails a day and I
can't use rules to move them where they belong...it makes for long, long
days.

Please advise ASAP!

Thank you!

Hello Scott I can relate to your frustration, it must be a Microsoft feature
by design with the outlook rule. Rule of thumb if you import a pst file
(personal folder) some can go missing which could affect the the way the
rules behave. I have also have had problems with rules after importing PST
files. One way to confirm if the rule will work is to create the rule from
an email in your inbox and apply the rule to all messages in the inbox and
see if this works. Failing this, I hate to say this but you may have to
reinstall.

Neville,

Thanks for the quick reply. I fear what you say is true. Of course, I did
not think that trying to import a PST from Outlook 2003 would cause any
problems with Outlook 2002, which in hindsight, was a logic error on my
part!

However, if I DO reinstall, will I be able to import specific folders from
the "corrupted" PST file without causing the same side effects all over
again? This is the question D'Jour, isn't it???

Thanks again for your input...I appreciate it!

Scott

Since rules are stored within the .PST file in Outlook 2002 and later
(earlier versions used a separate file for rules), you might want to try
running the Inbox Repair Tool on your .PST file and see if that fixes the
rules problem. Search your hard drive for a file called scanpst.exe and run
it.

Jocelyn,

Found and ran the Inbox Repair Tool against the PST file. It did not fiind
any errors, so it didn't make any corrections. Any other ideas of what I
can do here? I have no problem reinstalling the software or starting a new
PST file BUT ONLY IF I CAN IMPORT MY THOUSANDS OF MESSAGES THAT ARE ALREADY
STORED IN THE CURRENT PST FILE!!! Is this possible without the NEW PST file
getting corrupted?

Thanks for your input...I appreciate it very much!

Scott

Well, it can't hurt to try, and I see no reason why your new .PST (or the
old one, for that matter) would get corrupted...but make a backup of the old
..PST first just in case. Create the new file using File | New | Outlook
Data File. It will appear in your Folder List. You can then just drag and
drop folders and/or items from one .PST to the other. For default folders
like the Inbox and Calendar, drag and drop the items instead of the entire
folder (user-created folders can be dragged over as a whole). The final
step is to go into Tools | E-mail Accounts | View or Change Existing E-mail
Accounts and make the new .PST your default mail delivery location.
Hopefully the Rules Wizard will work properly in the new .PST.
