I bought an HP iPaq 550 which has Outlook 2002 on the accompanyibg CD.
Unfortunately, the product key for installation was on the original CD
sleeve, which I had thrown away - of course I didn't discover this till
I got a new notebook and tried to reinstall the programme. I have
telephoned both HP and Microsoft asking for the product key and they
were both less than helpful. So for now I am back to using Netscape for
email.

Can someone please tell me what the product key is for this programme?

TIA

Sorry, good try, but we do not help software pirates, especially those with
bogus claims that MS or HP won't help.

http://www.magicaljellybean.com will find your PID for installation if you
still have the old computer.

Since you don't know me thats quite unfair. I don't believe in software
piracy - I even spent more than £500 to buy Photoshop 5 rather than use
a pirated copy.. I don't have sinbgle piece of pirated software on my
machine - I wonder how many people here can genuinely claim that? No matter.

And you are not really in a postion to accuse me of lying. Especially
when I am not. I phoned both HP and Microsoft suport centre and each
directed me to the other and gave no help whatsoever. So I am left with
a copy of a programme which I cannot install or run. Well, I'll stick
with Netscape. I'm growing fonder of it by the day.

HP will have to resolve this. It is an OEM-supplied install CD.

Are you sure its Outlook 2002 ? That was not really out when the 5XX series
came out and they came with a Outlook 2000, some of them did not require a
key (not sure how they got away with that) but Brian is correct, the key
would have to come from HP as Microsoft will not support OEM disks.

Thanks Milly, but I'm afraid I don't have it. I was giving the old
notebook away toa friend and before I did so, I wiped the hard disc and
reinstalled a new copy of the operating system. Of course, it was only
after this that I discovered that I had no key for Outlook. Typical....

Thanks. Thats what I thought, too.

I phoned HP and after keeping me in hold for ages, the woman I spoke to
eventualy went off and checked with her supervisor and then came back
and said that since the programme was from Microsoft, they would have to
supply the missing key. I then phoned them (Microsoft) and after
retelling the story for the umpteenth time, the lady withe the lovely
Irish accent told me that they could not supply a product key and to try
HP. I said it was HP who had directed me to her.... her only other
suggestion was to buy a new copy of the programme.

I do have an older version of Outlook which will synchronise with the
iPaq, it just seems a bit daft to have the programme (real version, not
pirated) and not be able to do anything with it. Looks like I'll just
have to live with it.

Hello Ted -

Yes, it is definitely Outlook 2002... thanks to my atrocious typing, I
misspelled the iPaq version which ought to have read iPaq 5550 (not
550). Apologies for the confusion.

As soon as I had posted my message, I saw the "Ipaq" part and guessed you
were referring to the 555X series and not the old Jornada series.
I would send a letter (not email) and Fax to HP telling them they need
to supply this, under the license agreements it is up to them to provide the
key. They should have known better then to send you to Microsoft. I had the
same problem and finally after hours on the phone and nasty emails, I got
them to give me a key.

Nukleopatra,
One question, is the email address you have posted here a real one ? I
might have found a solution for you.

I just read HP's EULA for iPAQs and it says they do not support any of the
software EVEN IF PRELOADED IN ROM! Sheesh! Here's the exact wording:

"Options and Software

The Limited Warranty terms and conditions for HP options are as indicated in
the Limited Warranty applicable to HP options. HP DOES NOT WARRANT SOFTWARE
PRODUCTS, INCLUDING ANY SOFTWARE PRODUCTS OR THE OPERATING SYSTEM
PREINSTALLED BY COMPAQ OR HP. HP's only obligations with respect to software
distributed by HP under the HP or Compaq brand name are set forth in the
applicable end-user license or program license agreement. Non-HP hardware
and software products are provided AS IS. However, non-HP manufacturers,
suppliers, or publishers may provide their own warranties directly to you."

I called HP and was told that you can order the companion CD by calling
800-841-2761 and following the prompts to order a "Quick Restore Disk" for
your iPAQ. Press 1 then 2. Have your iPAQ serial number handy.
(Start>Settings>System>Asset Viewer>Identity)

I tried to test this out by calling the above. After a wait of about 10
minutes, an order taker came on the line, took my name, address, phone
number, and iPAQ serial number. I then asked how much it would cost to
replace the CD that came with the iPAQ. She said they have them and there
would be no charge. I asked what the cost would be two years down the road
when my iPAQ was out of warranty and she said that as long as they had them
in stock, there would be no charge.

So, it appears you can get a replacement.

I had forgotten that part of just asking for a new CD as I had a bad CD on
one of my Ipaqs and with hardly any questions, they sent out the new one.

Geez, and I complain at times about Microsoft's EULA ?? After reading what
you posted on the HP EULA, the Microsoft one looks great ! That HP EULA
sounds like is says "we are not responsible at all" Almost like buying an
old used car...
