Outlook 2002 Inbox Slowed Down

Greg

Recently, my preview pane went from near-instant display
of the selected e-mail to 3-5 seconds. The same delay
occurs when browsing mail as fully-opened messages.

This delay is maddening. I've disabled all my antivirus
stuff but that doesn't help.

My .pst file is pretty big (about 25MB), but the inbox
itself is not -- the filed mail is what's large.

Do you have any ideas about what the problem is?

Thanks.

Hi Greg,
I am having the same problem. Outlook is frustratingly slow.

I am running Windows XP and Office XP with all the latest upgrades.
Outlook is running very slowly.
For example there is a long delay (3-4 seconds) between selecting an email
message and having it appear in the preview panel.

It used to work fine with almost instant access before one of the latest
updates.

I tried uninstalling Outlook it and reinstalling it from the CD, twice. It
still has the same problem.

I guess the update doesn't get removed when you reinstall from CD. Maybe
the problem is in a common library????

The version I am running (from Help > About) is "Microsoft Outlook 2002
(10.4712.4219) SP-2"
What do you suggest I do to correct this problem, the program is close to
unusable.
If I cannot get this fixed, I will have to change to another email client.
Thank you
Martin

Martin,

I had to check my original e-mail to make sure you
weren't simply pasting my complaint into your message.
Latest upgrades...same Outlook version...same
delay...same instant migration from being very happy with
Outlook to finding it effectively unusable.

I didn't try reinstalling but did delete several MB from
my inbox and filed mail (and compacted the database) with
no success.

In this autoupdate era it's hard to know what changed,
but I can't think of any manual software, system or
config changes I might have made.

PRAISE BE TO GREG ! ! ! ! ! ! WOW ! ! Thank you Greg!! You are the
man!

I disabled Instant Messaging and the delay went away!!

I have been trying to fix that problem for about two painful weeks. I was
wasting what seemed like HOURS a day because email was so slow.

I did research the problem on the MS Knowledge Base and I actualy even
remember reading that very article, KB290025.

However I didn't think it applied to my situation .

The article says "If you are connected to a Microsoft Exchange computer and
have Instant Messaging enabled..."

Since (1) I am not connected to a Microsoft Exchange computer I didn't think
it applied.

Also (2) I did not enable or download or ever use Instant Messaging. It
must be enabled by default, because when I look at (Tools/Options/Other) it
was checked.

Please contact me off list (remove the two "d"s from email address below)
(e-mail address removed)

THANK YOU!
Martin

Martin, Greg,

As advised in a message on this group, try disbling the
link with Messenger in Tools Options Other.

This worked for me.

Cheers,

Pete

Greg and Martin,

I'm suffering from the same problem, tried the same
solutions, and had the same result.

It's driving me crazy -- it takes forever to check email.

Did ya'll figure out an answer?

Sam

Try disabling the integration with Instant Messenger in Tools | Options |
Other and see if that speeds things up.
