Sorry if this has been asked before, I've been trawling the NG's for
answers, but come up with nothing, so here goes: -

I'm running Outlook 2000 in Internet Mail mode only. If I create a new mail
message by either using the "New Message" from the Office Toolbar, or by
clicking on a "mailto" link, such as from a web page, and Outlook is not
already running, the mail is not sent. Looking in the task list, Outlook
still appears in there. If I then try to run Outlook, it doesn't respond,
but another "outlook" turns up in the task list. I have to kill all the
outlook processes to get outlook working again. When it is running again,
the mail that I typed has disappeared.
I'm running outlook on Win2K SP4, but I had the same issue on SP3.

It's only an 'issue' at the moment, but it is a bit of a pain having to
remember to open Outlook up before using mailto links, and it kind of
negates the point of having a "New message" button up on the office toolbar.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

IMO was a nasty little beast with a lot of gotchas. I'm glad it's long gone.
As I recall it never supported the New Message Button from the OSB because
it did not have sufficient MAPI support. URL mailto links should work,
however. Check your file associations. You may need to avoid LFN in the path
statement, as in:
"<drive>:\PROGRA~1\MICROS~2\Office\OUTLOOK.EXE" -c IPM.Note /m "%1"

Yup, that checks out OK.
I have just found something else though. In Tools->Options->Mail Delivery, I
have 'Send immediately when connected' ticked. If I take this tick away, the
problem goes away. On the other hand, it doesn't seem to matter if I am
connected to the net or not, having this option ticked still causes the lock
up.
It may be easier to leave the option off for now. It's less hassle to open
Outlook after the event to send the mail than it is to kill the [outlook]
processes and have to retype the mail.

Thanks for you help

Well I'm sure that the New Message button never worked for me with IMO, but
URL mailto did, even if I had "Send immediately" selected.
