Dear All

Please help me find a solution to this problem. Outlook 2000 has without
warning started to crash when: (i) it automatically checks for email, (ii) I
click send/receive, (iii) I click "Export to a file...". Thus I cannot check
my email with it!

The following message is displayed: "Microsoft Outlook has encountered a
problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

The error report contains the error signature: "AppName: outlook.exe
AppVer: 9.0.0.2416 ModName: kernel32.dll
ModVer: 5.1.2600.2945 Offset: 0000976f"

I have tried the following, all to no avail:

1) Disabling automatic email checking.
2) Running scanpst.exe
3) Renaming outcmd to .old
4) Running the program in 'safe mode' - it still crashed.
5) Disabling add-ins.
6) Creating a new profile.
7) Using 'Detect and repair...'
8) Uninstalling and reinstalling Office 2000
9) Downloading the latest security updates.

I am running Windows XP.

Please help with this issue; I have spent hours on it so far and it is
really frustrating me, especially as I have installed nothing new or done
anything I can think of that could have caused this.

Many thanks

Adam Willington

There are three files in
C:\\documentsandsettings\user\localsettings\applicationdata\microsoft\outlook

They are:

archive (7,456kb)
outlook (252,608kb)
some2094 (24,208kb)

Does that help?

Adam

Well the PST is not overly large. The maximum PST size for Outlook 2002 and
earlier is 2 gb but it can get flakey around 1.5 gb or higher. That certainly
isn't your problem.
Can you check your application event viewer please? Any Office related
errors would have an eventID number and source that would be helpful in
troubleshooting.

How would I find this? Do you mean the technical data contained within the
error report?

Thanks for your help so far.

Is this what you mean?

Were this happening to me, I'd use Outlook's Help>Detect and Repair (or a
repair install in Control Panel's Add or Remove Programs) and I'd create a
new mail profile. Exactly how to do that depends on whether your Outlook
2000 is installed in Internet Mail Only mode or Corporate/Workgroup mode.
The second line of Help>About will tell you if you don't know.

Dear Brian

Thanks for your reply, however please see above as I have tried both of
these already with no success.

I reviewed your first post and I se you mention both "detyect and repair"
and creating a new profile, so I'll grant you the first, but in Outlook 2000
IMO, it takes messing with the registry to create a new mail profile. Did
you do that, or are you using OL 2000 in C/W mode and created the new
profile with Control Panel's Mail applet?

The latter I guess. I'm not a very advanced user at all; I don't really know
anything about registries! How would I do this?

Thanks

How could you be unsure whether or not Outlook is installed in C/W mode
(when Help>About tells you and you would have had to specifically schoose
the mode when you installed) or whether or not you used the Mail applet in
Control Panel?

First tell me the mode of Outlook.

Brian, simply because I don't know what C/W mode is! I'm afraid I'm really a
bit out of my depth here so you might have to be a little patient with me!

Help/About reveals:

Microsoft(R) Outlook(R) 2000 SR-1 (9.0.0.3821)
Internet Mail Only

Copyright (C) 1995-1999 Microsoft Corp. etc. etc.

Does this tell you what you need to know?

Thanks for your patience.

Yes. It says you have OL 2000 installed in IMO mode (Internet Mail Only)
and not "Corporate/Workgroup" (CW) mode.

So, creating a new mail profile is more difficult. You have two choices:
use Tools>Options>Mail Delivery>Reconfigure Mail Support and change your
installation mode to Corporate/Workgroup (see
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=195507). Doing that will allow your to
manipulate the mail profiles in the Mail applet in Control Panel, which
would be easier, but if you use IMAP accounts, you can't take this choice.
Corporate/Workgroup mode does not support IMAP accounts.

If you elect to leave OL 2000 in IMO mode, then you'll need to create a new
mail profile by editing the registry. FOr Windows NT-based systems (i.e.,
NT, 2000, XP), the registry key containing the profile is
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows
Messaging Subsystem\Profiles . There should be a subkey under there named
"Microsoft Outlook Internet Settings". WIth Outlook closed, use regedit to
export this subkey to a file (so you can restore it later if things go
wrong) and then delete it. Start Outlook and it should be recreated. You
may need to re-add your accounts and if you leave copies of messages on the
server, they'll probably redownload again.

Gosh, wow - a lot of information. I'll give it a go! I use two accounts,
one is Gmail which is POP3 I think, and the other is definitely IMAP so I'll
have to use the registry mechanism.

I've never messed with registries before, so what exactly would I need to
click/type to export the subkey to a file? Also will deleting it delete both
profiles meaning I will need to reconfigure both?

Many thanks

Adam

Ok, so I just tried what you wrote and unfortunately it didn't work. I went
into regedit and exported the file to the desktop, then deleted it in regedit
and then opened Outlook. The registry was not recreated and the problem
remained. I therefore re-imported the registry.

There is also another registry there Name: (Default) Type: REG_SZ Data:
(value not set), which I exported but it wouldn't let me delete it.

Aaarrgh! I am so frustrated with this!

Do you have any other ideas?

I don't see how this is possible. Gove me a step-by-step description of
what you did and exactly what you see at each step, since I can't look over
your shoulder.

Brian

I re-read through what you wrote and realised I had deleted only a subkey
under Microsoft Outlook Internet Settings rather than the whole key. I
deleted the whole key this morning and then re-opened Outlook. I only had
to reconfigure one account, none of my messages were lost and now everything
works perfectly. Marvellous!

Thank you so much for your patience and help, I am really very pleased that
this is now sorted.

Kind regards and many thanks.
