I have an outgoing message that is 'stuck' in the outbox. The attachment is
very large and probably caused the problem. Each time I shutdown OUTLOOK I
get a message - "There are still messages ....." Outlook 2003

I have the same problem as you. See my posting sent here
15 minutes before yours today: "Outlook 2003 locks up
sending large attachments and duplicates". Not only it
gets stuck in the Outbox but it is also sent several
times. I tested it and reported the bug to Microsoft.

How do I reset the time out?

Tools>E-mail accounts. Select "View or change existing email accounts" and
click Next. Select your account and click Change, then More Settings.
Click the Advanced tab and you'll see a "Server Timeouts" slider. Move it
to the right.
