Outbox send problem

The first email I try to send once I start Outlook 2003 is placed in the
Outbox, but it is not italicized and the "Sent" column reports "None" (as
opposed to a date and time).

The next email(s) seem to fine, and get sent as you would expect. If I exit
Outlook and then start it again, I've got to do the same thing again-even if
there are already emails in the Outbox (both the "None" variety and the
dated and time variety).

Can anyone shed any light on this?

Sometimes I get online via a wireless network to cable, sometimes it's
through a dialup connection. I've got Outlook set up so that it won't
automatically send or receive mail, but rather waits for me to click on a
send or a receive button that I've programmed.

Thanks.

Reports here indicate that this can be caused by an antivirus program that
scans mail. If you have one, disable it and see if that helps.

Brian:
Sorry to say, but that did not help. I first just blocked checking outgoing
email, then I disabled Norton Antivirus altogether. Still the same problem.
I've also run scanpst and detect and repair under the help menu.
Any other suggestions would be appreciated!
Thanks
Bert.
