outbound email not italicized

Many times when I compose a new email or reply to or forward an email it is
placed in the outbox but it is not italicized and therefore does not
transmit. Sometimes I can recompose or in the case of reply / forward I
reconstruct the message and it works ok. Sometimes I have to do this three
or four times before it works. I noticed that deleting or modifying the
signature will cause the email to not italicize. What could possibly be the
problem. Am I the only person experiencing this???

I searched at http://support.microsoft.com on Outlook 2002. You never
mentioned WHICH version you use.

OL2002: Mail Sticks in the Outbox After You Install Office SP-2
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=328608

OL2002: Items in Outbox Are Not Sent After They Are Programmatically
Modified
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=294377
(What add-ins have been installed?)

Are you composing and sending while offline (File -> Work Offline)?

OL2002: A Copy of a Forwarded Message Stays in the Outbox

OL2002: Message Is Delayed in Outbox When You Reply to a Message in a
Team or Group Mailbox

Enable transport logging. Check if the e-mail is failing to get sent
the first time. If so, it can get stuck in the Outbox. You have to
open it and click Send again.

If you open a message in the Outbox before it gets sent, you change its
status and you'll have to Send it again.

Did you reply to an old message received through and old e-mail account
(and through which you are attempting to reply) that no longer exists?
If you have the "send immediately" option enabled, is the account
through which that message gets sent the correct connection and a valid
connection (i.e., still defined)?

Have you tried defining a new mail profile (Mail applet in Control
Panel)?

I'm using Outlook 2003 sp1. The program is set to 'on-line' at all times.
Many times while attempting to fix the problem I will open it, save it and
then press the send button. This never fixes the problem. I have not
changed any of the settings and my email accounts have also stayed the same
as when I first set up the program. The computer I use is about 2 months old
- I use XP pro and it is upgraded to sp2.

The problem I mentioned occurs intermittently and has plagued me both before
and after the SP2 upgrade.

Thank you for your helpful suggestions.

After trying to send the message and after it gets stuck in the Outbox,
enable transport logging, exit Outlook, delete any prior logfile, and
restart Outlook. If it isn't configured to schedule mail polls (which
means there will be a mail poll soon after starting Outlook) then do a
manual poll. Once the mail poll completes, take a look in the logfile
to see if Outlook even attempted to send the message. However, if the
message isn't italicized to indicate a pending send then it might not
show up, and you say that opening it and clicking Send doesn't get its
status changed. But was it italicized when it FIRST got into the
Outbox? If not, I'm wondering if you have an add-in that is
programmatically altering the message so that its status gets changed
(as mentioned in one of the KB articles that I listed). You could try
disabling all the Outlook add-ins, restart Outlook, and note its
behavior after that.

Before I try your suggestion I want to mention that at times I may create
several emails. Some originals, some to be forwarded and some that are
replies. After creating these I open the outbox and some are italicized and
some are not. The italicized emails get sent the others do not. As I said
before this is an intermittent problem.

Thank you for your suggestions.

One more suggestion is to disable outbound e-mail scanning by your
anti-virus product.
