We have an SBS 2000 server and from that i have a client machine
running outlook 2000, my account is also set to forward all mail to an
external email account as well as delivering to my exchange mail box.

When i've enabled the out of office assistant in the office last week
it didn't appear to work for external contacts , and for internal
contacts only worked for the first email they sent to me.

Anyone got any ideas?

Paul

I can't say for sure, but this sounds like something that happened to me when I first tried the OOO Asst.

With regard to your second point, the Assistant is set up to only send the Auto-reply message one time to each sender. Thus, if someone in your office has enabled the OOO Asst. and you end up sending multiple messages to that person during his/her absence, you will only get the out of office message one time. So it might seem like it's not working but it is.

With regard to the internal/external usage, it might be that you set up an additional rule rather than simply turning on the auto-reply message, which is what I did when we first got Outlook 2000. Between the "send auto-reply only once" rule and my history of setting rules in Groupwise, I was all confused!

If, when you opened the OOO Asst. dialog box, you clicked the "I am currently Out of the Office" radial button and added a rule (in the lower half of the dialog box), you might want to disable the rule and just use the radial button.

I'm not a techie, but I hope this addresses your problem.

Exchange server, by default, is set to deny replies and forwards to the
Internet. You would need to change this setting on Exchange but be aware
that you are opening yourself up to some nasty mail loops that could
potentially bring down your mail server.
