Can anyone tell me how out of office works? I'm on a
small home network and would like to be able to use it
when on holidays but can't figure it out. Do I need
exchange server?

If you don't connect to an Exchange server, there is no automatic out of
office autoreply. You'd have to spoof it with rules, and note that this
means leaving Outlook open, and connected to the internet, for the duration
of your absence.

See http://www.slipstick.com/rules/index.htm for help.

If your ISP is Unix/Linux based, and they allow telnet sessions, you might
be able to set up an away-from-office auto-reply on their servers. It's not
through Outlook, so you'd have to know the correct commands- and you'd have
to manually turn it on and off. A popular Unix/Linux one is "vacation"- and
this runs on your ISP's mail server, so contact them first. The advantage
is that you can leave your computer off. Remember tho- if you come back
from vacation, and don't turn the auto-responder off on your ISP's server,
nobody will be able to write back to you. They'll still get your "vacation"
message.
