Hi,

using XP PRo SP2 & PDF-Analyzer I get "out of memory error "when trying to
save a file ( even small ones less than 5 Mb!)

Plenty disk space; swap file auto handled by XP ( on a drive with 200 GB
free space). RAM is 2GB

What can I do to correct error ( since this prevents from saving work )

TIA !

It might not be a true, physical memory issue. Many programs need
temporary working space (~* -or- .tmp). Have you recently purged
your profile temp folder and the system temp folder ? You might try
that and see if the issue goes away.
C:\Windows\Temp (Any in use files will not be allowed for deletion)
C:\Documents and Settings\'YourLoginName'\Local Settings\Temp

Have you tested the programme on more than one file? Could the file
giving the error be corrupt?

Hope this helps.

No. Have tested on more than ten files : small ones, bigger ones, self-made
ones and downloaded ones. So muste be either a problem with the software, or
my system.
tested the software on my Win98SE work PC with no problem ( one three same
files that invoke the error on my XP Pro SP2 system)
And on the Win98SE PC I only have 512Mb RAM and less than 4GB free disk
space !! That's very frustrating !!

Have you checked with the makers of PDF Analyzer to verify it is compatible with XP-SP2? You might need to upgrade the program.

Ongoing. Have emailed, and awaiting an answer. Still seeking other advices, since often "it's not me it's the others" answers when problem occur !

Maybe you could download SysInternals Filemon program and then
attempt your save with Filemon running. After the error happens scroll
back through Filemon's log and see what drive I/O's were attempted
and what files are actually opened during the session with PDF analyzer.

Interseting idea. Will give it a try on both PCs to see if any difference.
Thanks for all suggestions

Another possability - I've seen some poorly written programs that check
for free disk space using only the low 32 bits of the actual value. If those
low bits aren't enough the program reports not enough disk space, even
though there could be trillions of bytes free!

Nice Catch - Things coded that were never anticipated, like drives
that are 300 Gigabytes or a Desktop system with 1.0+ Gigabytes
of RAM. It's like the Baseline Version checks that can't handle a
returned version Higher than what it is looking for.

As far as I know not true : "out of memory" error are also described in web
pages I have read when not enough swap file space, since Windows uses it as
"memory space extension". I am not an expert on the field however. Also note
I have 2GB RAM that functions OK on Memory test software. Difficult to think
it would be too little memory for whatever program ( don't have any problem
with video editing, audio editing, photo editing software using very big
files, way bigger than the pdf I here try to save!)
I am pretty sure it is a software problem with my Win XP install, not simply
my XP beeing bad, nor the program beeing bad : both work fine on their own.
It's only the interaction of these two that pops the problem up !

For info to thsoe interested :
have edited boot.ini to include after /fastdetect the /maxmem=1536
parameter.
Now PDF-Analyzer works Ok, and the rest as well.

Of course, no understanding of the "why" and valid correction : just walking
aside of my problem ( and not benefitting from the 512Mb leftover !)
