I messed around with the Windows firewall a couple of nights ago
(trying to get rid of alg.exe) and ever since I haven't been able to
get new emails and every time I open outlook I get that small red x in
the system tray. I did a system restore but that didn't seem to help.
It's a Dell Latitude D600 if that makes any difference and I'm running
XP

thanks for the reply, outlook doesn't show up in my exceptions list,
how can I create an exception?

one other question, can I just turn off my windows firewall if I
already have one installed from my company?

Umm....this may seem a little obvious but...have you looked at the File menu
and made sure that "Work Offline" isn't checked?

I thought of that as well. There doesn't seem to be an option in the
File menu for work offline.

Back to basics: What kind of e-mail server are you trying to connect to? Is
it GMail's POP server?

Do you get an error message of any kind?

How do you know there are e-mail messages waiting that you're not getting?

Have you tried sending a test message via e-mail to somebody and see if they
get it and can reply?

It's my work email. The error message is "microsoft exchange server is
unavailable". I know it's not working because it only shows emails as
of 10/31/05. I generally get automated emails from work every day. It's
possible my work server could be down but it would be a strange
coincidence for my work server to go down at the same time I decided to
change something in my registry. There was no planned maintenance and I
don't think anyone is even working this weekend due to the holiday. I
sent a message and it just went to my outbox.

Ahhh....how do you connect to your office server? Via VPN? If so do you
have your VPN connected?

Or are you using HTTP over RPC?

not sure I know what you mean. Can you give me a little more
instruction. I'm not very tech savvy.
