Rather than fight with getting the SP2 download to work through our
firewall, I decided to just do it at home over my cable connection -- should
only take about 20 minutes or less to download 230 meg, right? Well,
apparently the MS download manager, maybe in an attempt to be "friendly" to
company networks, has something in it that emulates a 9600-baud modem
.
It took almost 5 hours to finish the download! And there definitely was
nothing eating bandwidth on my connection, as everything else that I did on
the network that evening -- from the same PC or from my wife's -- was as
fast as usual.
In the end it downloaded OK, but I had trouble finding out where it went. In
the initial download dialog, it specified a destination in the Temp folder
under my Local Settings directory. When the download finished, it launched
an installer screen for the upgrade, which I exited out of. Going to the
Temp directory, there was nothing there that remotely resembled a 230-meg
download. Where did it go? Did it delete itself when I exited the installer?
Well, I eventually found a log file in the Temp directory and from what was
in there I found that it had uncompressed the download into a directory
under C:\Program Files\Windows Embedded\Installer\... I found all the files
there to burn to a CD-R and finally had an XPE SP2 Upgrade kit.
Isn't this Windows Embedded OEM stuff wonderful?
