It seems to me that I read, a while back, that Microsoft
was going to design a Messenger that would be able to
communicate with users of other messenger services, such
as AOL and Yahoo.

Is the windows messenger capable of communicating with
these, or how about the MSN messenger? Can we enter
contacts with e-mail addresses other than hotmail?

Greetings Fran,

The interoptability between clients never happened and as such, Windows Messenger can only
log on to the .NET Messenger network (or Exchange/SIP-based Communications Services) -- it
cannot be used to logon or message contacts on AOL/AOL Instant Messenger or Yahoo Messenger.

However, Messenger accounts are based on .NET Passports, and as such, a Passport can be *any*
e-mail address, not just hotmail.
